Brazilian Ship Pedro I
''Pedro I'' was a ship of the line of the Imperial Brazilian Navy. It was a third-rate, Mast (sailing), three-masted, gun deck, two-decked 74-cannon, gunned sailing ship. The ship was built by builder Antônio da Silva in the Bahia Navy Arsenal in Salvador, Bahia, Salvador for the Portuguese navy in Colonial Brazil in 1763. First named ''Santo António e São José'', it took part in several naval actions in the decades after its construction such as the Bombardment of Algiers (1784), bombardment of Algiers in 1784. It was part of the fleet that Transfer of the Portuguese court to Brazil, transferred the Portuguese royal family and its court to Brazil during the French invasion of Portugal. Edoardo De Martino
Edoardo Federico De Martino (29 March 1838 – 12 May 1912) was an Italian painter, active in South America and London as a painter of warships and naval battles. Biography He was born in Meta di Sorrento. He served as an officer in the Italian Navy, but by age thirty, influenced by members of the School of Resina, he turned to painting, first in Naples. He gained fame in London, where his depictions of famous British naval victories and ships were highly prized, including by Queen Victoria. He painted depictions of the naval battles of Trafalgar, of the Nile, and of Cape San Vincenzo. From 1905 onward, he painted also many Italian naval ships. Aftercastle
An aftercastle (or sometimes aftcastle) is the stern structure behind the mizzenmast and above the transom on large sailing ships, such as carracks, caravels, galleons and galleasses. Culverin
A culverin was initially an ancestor of the hand-held arquebus, but later was used to describe a type of medieval and Renaissance cannon. The term is derived from the French "''couleuvrine''" (from ''couleuvre'' "grass snake", following the Latin ''colubrinus'' "of the nature of a snake".) From its origin as a hand-held weapon it was adapted for use as artillery by the French in the 15th century, and for naval use by the English in the 16th century. Carronade
A carronade is a short, smoothbore, cast-iron cannon which was used by the Royal Navy. It was first produced by the Carron Company, an ironworks in Falkirk, Scotland, and was used from the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century. Its main function was to serve as a powerful, short-range, anti-ship and anti-crew weapon. The technology behind the carronade was greater dimensional precision, with the shot fitting more closely in the barrel thus transmitting more of the propellant charge's energy to the projectile, allowing a lighter gun using less gunpowder to be effective. The Battle of 4 May was fought in open sea near Salvador, Bahia, on 4 May 1823, between the Imperial Brazilian Navy, under the command of British admiral Thomas Cochrane, and the Portuguese Navy during the Brazilian War of Independence.
