Walter Hugo Khouri
Walter Hugo Khouri (São Paulo, 21 October 1929 – São Paulo, 27 June 2003) was a Brazilian film director, screenwriter, and producer of Lebanese and Italian descent. Khouri made 25 feature films and won several national and international awards. His 1964 film '' Empty Night'' is considered one of the best Brazilian films of all time and was entered for the Palm d'Or in the 1965 Cannes Film Festival. His films show characters, mostly male, who seek meaning for a distressing existence. He was also known for welcoming and introducing young professionals, being the first director to cast the presenter Xuxa Meneghel in the controversial 1982 film '' Love Strange Love''. 1970 Cannes Film Festival
The 23rd Cannes Film Festival ran from 3 to 18 May 1970. This year, Robert Favre LeBret, the founder of the festival, decided not to include any films from Russia and Japan (their flags were missing on the Croisette). He was tired of the "Slavic spectacles and Japanese samurai flicks.". The Russians took back their juror Sergei Obraztsov (head of Moscow puppet theater) and left the jury panel with only eight members. Nobel Prize for Literature winner Miguel Ángel Asturias was appointed as President of the Jury. At the time, he was serving as ambassador from Guatemala to France. The Palme d'Or went to the '' MASH'' by Robert Altman. Nelson Pereira dos Santos (22 October 1928 21 April 2018) was a Brazilian film director. He directed films such as ''Vidas secas (film), Vidas Secas'' (Barren Lives), based on the Vidas Secas, book with the same name by Brazilian writer Graciliano Ramos. Biography Pereira dos Santos, named in honor of Almirante Horatio Nelson, was born in São Paulo, Brazil. Himself a frequenter of the cinema, Pereira dos Santos's father brought his very young son to the movie theater for the first time. By secondary school Pereira dos Santos was already fond of literature, and at 15 years old he joined the Brazilian Communist Party and became close to one of its other members, Astrojildo Pereira, Astrogildo Pereira. ''The End of Man'' ( pt, Finis Hominis) is a 1971 Brazilian film directed by José Mojica Marins. The unusual and surreal film was made on a low budget, and rather than the often disturbing gothic horror of his previous films, ''The End of Man'' conveys a sense of social black humor and tongue in cheek style seen in other Brazilian ''Mouth of Garbage Cinema ''(Boca do Lixo) of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
