The Brazil national football team participated in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, and in doing so maintained their record of being the only team to enter every World Cup Finals. The team was managed for the second consecutive time by Telê Santana and the captain was Edinho. Brazil played until the quarter-finals, when they were defeated by France on penalties. Brazil National Football Team
The Brazil national football team ( pt, Seleção Brasileira de Futebol), nicknamed ''Seleção Canarinho'' (‘Canary Squad’, after their bright yellow jersey), represents Brazil in men's international football and is administered by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), the governing body for football in Brazil. Chris Bambridge
Christopher Francis Bambridge (born 7 October 1947) is an Australian retired football referee. Born in Kettering, England he came to Australia from Britain in 1974. A Grade One referee, Bambridge was appointed to the national league in 1977, where he stayed until his retirement in 1991. He was awarded the FIFA badge in 1981, gaining selection to the panel of linesmen for the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia that year. Following his appointment as linesman for the quarter finals, semi-finals and final of the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship. Bambridge refereed the final of the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship in China. He was also selected for and officiated at the 1986 FIFA World Cup finals in Mexico and the 1988 Summer Olympic games in South Korea, becoming the only Australian referee to have taken part in both World Cup and Olympic Games finals. Ioan Igna
Ioan Igna (born 4 June 1940) is a Romanian former football referee and player. Igna played football at UTA Arad between 1957 and 1960 and 1964–1967 and at Știința Timișoara between 1961 and 1964, he became a referee in 1972. He is known for having refereed two matches in the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, including an epic quarter-final match between Brazil and France. Igna made two controversial calls during the tie. In the second period of extra time, he did not penalise a foul by the Brazil goalkeeper Carlos on France attacker Bruno Bellone. BBC commentator Jimmy Hill described Igna's decision to ignore the foul by Carlos as "an extreme mistake". In the penalty shootout, he awarded a goal when Bellone's shot hit the post and the ball rebounded off Carlos before entering the goal. Michel Platini
Michel François Platini (born 21 June 1955) is a French football administrator and former player and manager. Regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Platini won the Ballon d'Or three times in a row, in 1983, 1984 and 1985, and came seventh in the FIFA Player of the Century vote. In recognition of his achievements, he was named a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1985 and became an Officier in 1998. Siegfried Kirschen (born 13 October 1943 in Chemnitz) is a retired East German football referee. He supervised four matches in the FIFA World Cup, two in 1986 and two in 1990. As a referee Kirschen was initially active himself as a junior footballer at SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt, passed his referee exams in 1961, refereed 251 DDR-Oberliga games from 1972 to 1991 and on 17 May 1980, the FDGB Cup final between FC Carl Zeiss Jena and FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt, which ended 3:1 a.e.t. in Berlin's Stadion der Weltjugend in front of 45,000 spectators. Josimar (footballer, Born 1961)
Josimar Higino Pereira (born 19 September 1961), more commonly known as Josimar, is a Brazilian former footballer. Throughout his career, he played as a right-back, mainly with Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas and the Brazil national team. In his prime, he was named the best right-back in the world by FIFA. He is currently assistant coach at Botafogo. Career Josimar was born in Rio de Janeiro. Josimar won 16 caps with the Brazil national team, from June 1986 to November 1989. He played three times during the 1986 Football World Cup after an injury to first choice right back Édson.
