''Brasiliopuntia'' is a genus in the cactus family, Cactaceae. It contains only one species, ''Brasiliopuntia brasiliensis''. It is found in Brazil, Paraguay, eastern Bolivia, Peru and northern Argentina, and has become naturalized in Florida among other places. Description ''Brasiliopuntia brasiliensis'' shows thin, slightly shrunken cladodes on a central cylindrical trunk. The leaves are bright green. Its white areoles bear one or two small brown upright spines. Its light brown flowers appear only on adult plants. This tree-cactus can grow as high as fortynine feet ( fifteen meters); the tallest member of the Opuntia subfamily. Alwin Berger
Alwin Berger (28 August 1871 – 20 April 1931) was a German botanist best known for his contribution to the nomenclature of succulent plants, particularly agaves and cacti. Born in Germany he worked at the botanical gardens in Dresden and Frankfurt. From 1897 to 1914 he was curator of the Giardini Botanici Hanbury, the botanical gardens of Sir Thomas Hanbury at La Mortola, near Ventimiglia in northwestern Italy, close to the border with France. Karl Moritz Schumann (17 June 1851 – 22 March 1904) was a German botanist. Schumann was born in Görlitz. He was curator of the Botanisches Museum in Berlin-Dahlem from 1880 until 1894.
