Cass Lake, Minnesota
Cass Lake is a city in Cass County, Minnesota, United States, located within the boundaries of the Leech Lake Indian Reservation. It is surrounded by Pike Bay Township. Cass Lake had a population of 675 in the 2020 census. It is notable as the headquarters location of Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, as well as the Chippewa National Forest. The city is located on the shore of its namesake Cass Lake, which was named in honor of Michigan Governor Lewis Cass. Cass Lake is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. Garrison is a city in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, United States, along Mille Lacs Lake. The population was 210 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. Cuyuna ( ) is a city in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 332 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city lies within its namesake, the Cuyuna Range, a line of iron-bearing hills in central Minnesota. Cuyuna was one of the mining towns along the range, part of a list including Crosby, Ironton, Trommald, and Manganese. The Cuyuna iron range saw its heyday in the first half of the 20th century, and mining on the range ceased in 1984. The local economy is now dependent upon tourism from mountain bikers. History A post office called Bena has been in operation since 1898. Bena is a type of bird mentioned in the poem ''The Song of Hiawatha''. Motley is a city in Cass and Morrison counties in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 680 at the 2020 census. The main part of Motley is located within Morrison County; only a minor part of the city extends into Cass County The Cass County portion of Motley is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Motley was laid out in 1874. A post office has been in operation at Motley since 1873. In 1881, the Northern Pacific Railway built a 20’ x 40’ passenger station on the east side of 2nd Street (between Front Street and Main Street) and built a 24’ x 60’ freight depot on the west side of 2nd Street.
