Brackenridge Park is a 343-acre public park in San Antonio, Texas, USA, on the city's Broadway Corridor just north of downtown San Antonio. Brackenridge Park also refers to the district of the city where the park is located. History It was created in 1899 from land donated to the city by George Washington Brackenridge. Recreation and features Attractions within the park include the San Antonio Zoo, the Witte Museum, the Japanese Tea Gardens, the Sunken Garden Theater, the Tuesday Musical Club, First Tee of San Antonio and the narrow gauge San Antonio Zoo Eagle train ride, which first opened in 1956 and utilizes three Chance Rides C.P. Huntington locomotives. Other nearby attractions include the DoSeum and the San Antonio Botanical Garden. San Antonio Botanical Garden
The San Antonio Botanical Garden is a , non-profit botanical garden in San Antonio, Texas, United States, and the city's official botanical garden. History The garden was first conceived in the 1940s by Mrs. R. R. Witt and Mrs. Joseph Murphy, who organized the San Antonio Garden Center. The two went on to develop a master plan for a city botanical center in the late 1960s. The site of the master plan was a former limestone quarry and waterworks area owned by the city. Voters approved $265,000 in bonds in 1970, which was the catalyst for funding the new gardens. Ground was broken for the new facilities on July 21, 1976 and the San Antonio Botanical Gardens officially opened to the public on May 3, 1980. The gardens have had two major additions since opening. Brackenridge Park Bridge
The Brackenridge Park Bridge is a historic iron Lenticular truss bridge located in San Antonio, Texas. The bridge was built in 1890 and remains open for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Composed of a single truss of just over , it is one of the shortest lenticular truss bridges in the country and one of just eight located west of the Mississippi River. The bridge is a contributing property to the Brackenridge Park Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in August 2011. Brackenridge Park Golf Course is a historic golf course in San Antonio, Texas and the oldest 18-hole public golf course in Texas. It opened for play in 1916 and was the first inductee into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. Dionicio Rodriguez
Dionicio Rodriguez (1891–1955) was a Mexican-born artist and architect whose work can be seen in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Texas, as well as Washington, D.C. and Mexico City. Dionicio Rodríguez died in San Antonio on December 16, 1955, and was buried in San Fernando Archdiocesan Cemetery; he had no immediate survivors. His work is noted for its unique style of concrete construction that imitates wood, known as ''Faux Bois'' (French for ''false wood''). Gates, benches and artificial rock formations were created by the artist to invite visitors to rest or explore the landscape.
