Boydville
Boydville is a late Georgian style mansion in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The house is near the center of the associated Boydville Historic District in . The house was built in 1812 by Elisha Boyd, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and an officer of the Fourth Virginia Regiment in the War of 1812. The two story stucco-covered stone house consists of a center wing with nine rooms, a right wing that originally served as the nursery, and a left wing that housed the kitchens. The center-hall main house retains its original woodwork, with hand-carved door frames and mantelpieces imported from England. Interior partitions are brick covered with plaster. Elisha Boyd left the house to his daughter Mary at his death in 1841. Mary was married to Charles J. Faulkner I (1806–1884), was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates who advocated a gradual abolition of slavery and the forcible annexation of Texas from Mexico. Boydville Historic District
The Boydville Historic District includes an area of Martinsburg, West Virginia that was developed for the well-to-do of Martinsburg at the turn of the twentieth century. The district is named for Boydville, the mansion at the core of the district. The district runs generally along South Queen Street to the south of the Downtown Martinsburg Historic District and to the east of the Boomtown Historic District. The district is associated with a number of figures from the early history of Martinsburg, including General Elisha Boyd, who owned portions of the area in the 1790s, as well as General Adam Stephen, founder of Martinsburg. The principal building in the area is the Boydville mansion, built about 1812. Elisha Boyd
Elisha Boyd (October 6, 1769 – October 21, 1841) was a Virginia lawyer, soldier, slaveowner and politician who served in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly, and developed Berkeley County. Early and family life Elisha Boyd was born on October 6, 1769, in what became Berkeley County, Virginia (in 1772) to Sarah Griffith Boyd and her husband John Boyd, who had purchased a large tract from Lord Fairfax at the headwaters of Tuscarora Creed at the east base of North Mountain and the northernmost end of the Shenandoah Valley. His father was thus one of the early emigrants to Berkeley County, which the Virginia General Assembly split it off from then-vast and later neighboring Frederick County, Virginia. Charles James Faulkner
Charles James Faulkner (September 21, 1847January 13, 1929) was a United States senator from West Virginia. Early life Born on the family estate, "Boydville," near Martinsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia). His father was Charles James Faulkner Sr., a U.S. Representative from Virginia and West Virginia and U.S. Minister to France. He accompanied his father to France 1859; he attended school in Paris and Switzerland. He returned to the United States in 1861, and during the Civil War entered the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington in 1862. He served with the cadets in the Battle of New Market. Edgewood (Bunker Hill, West Virginia)
Edgewood, also known as the John Boyd House, is a historic home located at Bunker Hill, Berkeley County, West Virginia. It was built in 1839 and is a two-story, five-bay, brick dwelling with a gable roof in the Greek Revival style. The entrance features a semi-elliptical transom and sidelights. The building has a two-story rear ell. The property includes a small log slave cabin. The house was built by General Elisha Boyd for his son John as the plantation house for the 1,400 acre Edgewood Manor plantation. During the American Civil War, John Boyd served in the Confederate Army and was captured when he visited home.
