Boyd Young
Boyd Daniel Young (December 22, 1939 – March 11, 2019) was an American labor union leader. Born in Evadale, Texas, Young began working at the East Texas Pulp & Paper Company. He joined the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers, and soon became a shop steward, then in 1971, he was elected as president of his local union. That same year, the union merged into the new United Paperworkers' International Union, with Young continuing in his post. In 1973, Young was asked by the international union to assist with workers' campaigns in Houston and across east Texas. He was successful in the role, and from 1975 worked full-time for the union as an international representative. In 1988, he became the union's vice president for Region VI. In 1996, Young defeated Gerald Johnston, to win election as president of the union. From 1997, he also served as a vice-president of the AFL-CIO. Evadale is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Jasper County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,246 at the 2020 census. Geography Evadale is located in southern Jasper County at (30.353492, -94.065332). It is bordered to the west by the Neches River, which forms the Hardin County line. U.S. Route 96 passes through the community, leading northeast to Buna and west to Silsbee. Farther afield, Jasper is north via US-96, and Beaumont is to the southwest. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Evadale CDP has a total area of , of which are land and , or 3.78%, are water. International Brotherhood Of Pulp, Sulphite And Paper Mill Workers
The International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite, and Paper Mill Workers (IBPSPMW) was a labor union representing workers involved in making paper in the United States and Canada. The union was founded on January 6, 1906, as a split from the International Brotherhood of Paper Makers. In 1909, it was chartered by the American Federation of Labor. By 1926, it had 10,000 members. The union was affiliated to the AFL–CIO from 1955 and by 1957 it had grown to have 165,000 members. In 1958, it absorbed the United Wall Paper Craftsmen of North America. However, in 1964, many of its West Coast members left to form the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers. A union representative, union steward, or shop steward is an employee of an organization or company who represents and defends the interests of their fellow employees as a labor union member and official. The United Paperworkers' International Union (UPIU) was a labor union representing workers involved in making paper, and later various industrial workers, in the United States and Canada. The union was founded on August 9, 1972, when the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers merged with the United Papermakers and Paperworkers. Like both its predecessors, it was chartered by the AFL–CIO. On formation, the union had 389,000 members. In 1974, the large majority of its Canadian section split away, to form the Canadian Paperworkers' Union. In 1978, Joseph Tonelli, the union's president, was indicted on a charge of embezzling $360,000 of union money. In 1987 and 1988, UPIU members struck against International Paper in Jay, Maine.
