Boxing At The 2016 Summer Olympics
The boxing tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 21 August 2016 at the Pavilion 6 of Riocentro. However, boxing at the games was overshadowed with controversy after there were doubts raised that results in certain bouts had been manipulated. These concerns were upheld in a report published in 2021. Competition format On March 23, 2013, the Amateur International Boxing Association instituted significant changes to the format. The World Series of Boxing, AIBA's pro team league which started in 2010, already enabled team members to retain 2012 Olympic eligibility. The newer AIBA Pro Boxing Tournament, consisting of pros who sign 5 year contracts with AIBA and compete on pro cards leading up to the tournament, also provides a pathway for new pros to retain their Olympic eligibility and retain ties with national committees. Riocentro
Riocentro is an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1977, it is the largest exhibition center in Latin America. Notable events 1981 May Day attack On April 30, 1981, during a May Day music concert, Riocentro was the target of a terrorist attack by hardliner members of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Sergeant Guilherme Pereira do Rosário and then-Captain Wilson Dias Machado, nowadays a Colonel, were responsible for detonating two bombs at the venue. Around 9 p.m., however, one of the bombs exploded in the lap of Sergeant Rosário, killing him and seriously wounding Machado. A second bomb exploded a few miles away at a powerhouse responsible for providing electrical energy to Riocentro; it was thrown over the fence and exploded on the ground, and the electric power supply was never interrupted that evening. Boxing At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's Flyweight
The men's flyweight boxing competition at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics was held from 13 to 21 August at the Riocentro. The medals for the competition were presented by Irena Szewinska, Poland, IOC member, and the gifts were presented by Wu Ching-kuo, President of the AIBA. Competition format Like all Olympic boxing events, the competition was a straight single-elimination tournament. This event consisted of 26 boxers who have qualified for the competition through various qualifying tournaments held in 2015 and 2016. The competition began with a preliminary round on 13 August, where the number of competitors was reduced to 16, and concluded with the final on 21 August. As there were fewer than 32 boxers in the competition, a number of boxers received a bye through the preliminary round. Both semi-final losers were awarded bronze medals. Hasanboy Marfjon Ugli Dusmatov (born 24 June 1993) is an Uzbekistani professional boxer. As an amateur, Dusmatov won a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2013 Summer Universiade as a light flyweight. He also three-time Asian Amateur Boxing Champion.
