The 1932 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the X Olympiad and also known as Los Angeles 1932) were an international multi-sport event held from July 30 to August 14, 1932 in Los Angeles, California, United States. The Games were held during the worldwide Great Depression, with some nations not traveling to Los Angeles; 37 nations competed, compared to the 46 in the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, and then-U.S. President Herbert Hoover did not attend the Games. The organizing committee did not report the financial details of the Games, although contemporary newspapers claimed that the Games had made a profit of US$1,000,000. Host city selection The selection of the host city for the 1932 Summer Olympics was made at the 23rd IOC Session in Rome, Italy, on 9 April 1923. Lawrence Stevens
Lawrence Stevens (25 February 1913 – 17 August 1989) was a South African boxer who competed in the 1932 Summer Olympics. He was born in Johannesburg and died in Durban, Natal. Both of his parents were born and raised in Johannesburg, all four of his grandparents were immigrants from England. In 1930, he won the featherweight silver medal at the 1930 British Empire Games after losing the final to Frank Meachem. Two years later, he won the gold medal in the lightweight class after winning the final against Thure Ahlqvist. Stevens was mentioned on the British quiz show ''Pointless'' on 26 January 2016, where South Africa was a "pointless answer" in the category of "Countries that won a gold medal winners at the 1932 or 1936 Summer Olympics". Nathan Bor
Nathan "Nat" Bor (March 1, 1913 – June 13, 1972) was an American boxer who won a light weight bronze medal at the 1932 Summer Olympics. He continued primarily a professional welterweight boxing career until around 1940, when he served as a Marine in WWII, before returning to start a dry cleaning business in his home of Fall River, Massachusetts. Personal Bor was Jewish, and of Russian heritage. He was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on March 1, 1913. Amateur career As an amateur, Bor won 90 of 95 bouts, taking both the New England and then the National lightweight championships. During his amateur career, he sidelined as a telephone operator in his home of Fall River. Hyman Barnett "Harry" Mizler (22 January 1913 – March 1990) was an English boxer who competed for Great Britain in the 1932 Summer Olympics and won the British BBoC Lightweight title in January 1934. Early life and amateur career Mizler was born in Wicket Street, St Georges in the heart of the East End of London to Jewish parents. They had a fish stall in Watney Street Market and after leaving school he worked in the stall along with his brothers Moe and Judah, who also boxed. Robert Purdie (18 February 1911 – 9 July 1982) was a New Zealand boxer who represented his country at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Biography Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1911, Purdie won three New Zealand national boxing titles, in the featherweight division in 1930 and 1931, and the lightweight division in 1932. In 1930 he won the Jamieson Belt for the most scientific boxer at the national championships. In 1932, Purdie was one of three New Zealand boxers to compete at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Fighting in the lightweight division, Purdie controversially lost his first round fight to the Italian, Mario Bianchini.
