Arthur Lyon Bowley
Sir Arthur Lyon Bowley, FBA (6 November 1869 – 21 January 1957) was an English statistician and economist who worked on economic statistics and pioneered the use of sampling techniques in social surveys. Early life Bowley's father, James William Lyon Bowley, was a minister in the Church of England. He died at the age of 40 when Arthur was one, leaving Arthur's mother as mother or stepmother to seven children. Arthur was educated at Christ's Hospital, and won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge to study mathematics. He graduated as Tenth Wrangler. At Cambridge Bowley had a short course of study with the economist Alfred Marshall who had also been a Cambridge wrangler. Under Marshall's influence Bowley became an economic statistician. His ''Account of England's Foreign Trade'' won the Cobden Essay Prize and was published as a book. Marshall watched over Bowley's career, recommending him for jobs and offering him advice. Frederick Bowley (Worcestershire Cricketer)
Frederick Lloyd Bowley (9 November 1873 – 31 May 1943) was a first-class cricketer who played county cricket for Worcestershire from the 1890s to the 1920s. He also represented the Players against the Gentlemen on four occasions. Career Having appeared for Worcestershire on a number of occasions before its elevation to the County Championship, Bowley made his first-class debut in Worcestershire's second match at that level, against Sussex at Hove in mid-May 1899. He opened the batting with Wilfrid Foster, but was bowled for 4 in each innings, though he did take a catch to dismiss opposing captain Billy Murdoch. Four further games that season produced a highest score of just 21. After a near miss with 95 against Sussex a few days earlier, Bowley scored his maiden hundred by hitting 118 against Hampshire at the end of May 1900. Marian Bowley
Marian Bowley (1911–2002) was an economist and historian of economic thought. She was the daughter of the economist and statistician Arthur Bowley. Daniel Perez and Joshua Sosa (1936) at the London School of Economics she was first appointed to a lectureship at the Dundee School of Economics in 1938. After government service during World War II she was appointed to a lectureship at University College, London in 1947, and became successively Reader and Professor of Economics. She retired in 1975. Her main contributions were in the field of the history of economic thought. Her 1937 study on Nassau Senior, ''Nassau Senior and Classical Economics'' is to date the most important source on this relatively forgotten and often misunderstood member of the Classical economics, Classical school. Ted Bowley
Edward Henry Bowley (6 June 1890 – 9 July 1974) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Sussex County Cricket Club and the England cricket team. A forceful opening batsman, Bowley played just one season of regular first-class cricket before the First World War and was 30 when he resumed his cricket career in 1920. But for the next 14 seasons he was a reliable run-getter, and for the three seasons from 1927 to 1929 was among the heaviest scorers in the country. At 39, he was called up for two Test matches against South Africa in 1929, and the following winter he toured New Zealand and Australia with Harold Gilligan's Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) team, playing in three of the four Test matches against New Zealand. He scored 109 at Auckland. Bowley shared in several big partnerships for Sussex, two of them still county records.
