Alfred Bowerman
Alfred James Bowerman (22 November 1873 – 20 June 1947) was an English cricketer who played two first-class matches for Somerset in the early 20th century, and also played in the only cricket match at the Olympic Games, at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. Personal life Alfred James Bowerman was born in Broomfield, Somerset on 22 November 1873. After attending Blundell's School in Tiverton, Devon, he worked as a timber merchant in the Bridgwater area. He married Frances Mabel (née Long) in 1895. In 1910, he was taken to court over a gambling debt, and two years later he sold his timber business and emigrated with his family to Australia in December 1912 to establish a new career as a farmer. He served in the First World War as part of the Australian Imperial Force, active in the Middle East. William Jay Bowerman (February 19, 1911 – December 24, 1999) was an American track and field coach and co-founder of Nike, Inc. Over his career, he trained 31 Olympic athletes, 51 All-Americans, 12 American record-holders, 22 NCAA champions and 16 sub- 4 minute milers. Bowerman disliked being called a coach, and during his 24 years at the University of Oregon, the Ducks track and field team had a winning season every year but one, attained 4 NCAA titles, and finished in the top 10 in the nation sixteen times. Edward LeRoy Bowerman
Edward LeRoy Bowerman (June 2, 1892 – February 17, 1977) was a Canadian politician and farmer. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1945 Canadian federal election as a member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation for the electoral district of Prince Albert by defeating William Lyon Mackenzie King, then the Prime Minister of Canada, in a huge upset, the last of four times that King was defeated in Canadian politics. After serving as an opposition member in the 20th Canadian Parliament, Bowerman lost his seat to Liberal challenger Francis Heselton Helme in 1949. In honor of Bowerman's service to the provincial government of Saskatchewan, the Parliament named a lake after him in the northern part of the province in 1972. Elsie Edith Bowerman (18 December 1889 – 18 October 1973) was a British lawyer, suffragette, political activist, and RMS ''Titanic'' survivor. Early life Elsie Edith Bowerman was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, the only daughter of William Bowerman and his wife Edith Martha Barber. Her father, William, was a prosperous businessman and died when Elsie was five years old. She attended Wycombe Abbey as a boarder from the age of 11 in 1901, becoming the youngest student there. She later wrote the biography of Frances Dove, her headmistress during her time at Wycombe. Frank Eugene Bowerman (December 5, 1868 – November 30, 1948) was an American catcher and manager in Major League Baseball with the Baltimore Orioles, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the New York Giants, and the Boston Doves, as well as a player-manager for the Doves in his last season in professional baseball. Fred William Bowerman
Fred William Bowerman (January 8, 1893 – May 1, 1953) was an American bank robber and Depression-era outlaw. A veteran holdup man whose criminal career lasted more than 30 years, Bowerman was placed on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list in 1953. Later that year, he led the disastrous Southwest Bank holdup in St. Louis, Missouri, in which he and his three partners wound up in a standoff with more than 100 officers of the St. Louis Police Department. Bowerman died a week later of gunshot wounds sustained during the robbery. Jay Bowerman (August 15, 1876 – October 25, 1957) was an American politician of the Republican Party who served as the 13th Governor of Oregon, for the final few months of the term of Frank Benson, who retired due to illness. Early life Bowerman was born in Hesper, Iowa, the son of Daniel and Lydia (Battey) Bowerman. He received his early education in public schools and moved to Salem, Oregon, in 1893. Bowerman entered Willamette University in 1893, and graduated with a law degree in 1896. He was admitted to the Oregon Bar the following year, practicing law in Salem until 1899.
