Bouverie Francis Primrose
Bouverie Francis Primrose (1813–1898) was a British landowner and administrator. Life He was born on 19 September 1813 near Edinburgh the second son of Archibald Primrose, 4th Earl of Rosebery and his wife Harriett Bouverie. In 1817 the family moved into the then-new Dalmeny House. In 1839 he was appointed Receiver General for the Post Office in Scotland. He also served as secretary of the Joint Board of Manufacture and Fisheries for most of his life. He held the rank of Lt Colonel in the Queen's City of Edinburgh Rifle Volunteer Brigade. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1849. His proposer was Sir John Murray, Lord Murray. He retired in 1882 and died on 20 March 1898. Vice Admiral George Anson Primrose RN (1849–1930) was a senior British naval officer. Life He was born at 22 Moray PlaceEdinburgh Post Office directory 1849 in Edinburgh on 21 September 1849, the son of the Hon Bouverie Francis Primrose and his wife Frederica Sophia Anson, daughter of Thomas Anson, 1st Viscount Anson. He entered the Royal Navy in March 1863 aged 13; by September 1873 he had reached the rank of Lieutenant. In March 1887 he became Acting Captain of HMS ''Pylades'' for just under two months. In 1890 he was appointed to the training ship ''Boscawen'' where he served until promoted to Captain in 1892. In 1893 he commanded HMS ''Apollo'' during the annual manoeuvres, before being appointed in command of the royal yacht ''Osborne'' in October 1893. Scottish National Portrait Gallery
The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is an art museum on Queen Street, Edinburgh. The gallery holds the national collections of portraits, all of which are of, but not necessarily by, Scots. It also holds the Scottish National Photography Collection. Since 1889 it has been housed in its red sandstone Gothic revival building, designed by Robert Rowand Anderson and built between 1885 and 1890 to accommodate the gallery and the museum collection of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. The building was donated by John Ritchie Findlay, owner of ''The Scotsman'' newspaper. In 1985 the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland was amalgamated with the Royal Scottish Museum, and later moved to Chambers Street as part of the National Museum of Scotland. Robert Herdman
Robert Inerarity Herdman RSA RSW (17 September 1829 – 10 January 1888) was a Victorian artist specialising in portraiture and historical compositions. He is also remembered for a series of pastoral scenes featuring young girls. He received commissions from most Scottish city councils, and is work is found in many galleries including the Royal Scottish Academy and National Portrait Gallery, London. He was elected an Associate of the RSA in 1861 and became a Fellow in 1863. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution in London 1861–1887. He exhibited in Philadelphia in 1876 and Paris in 1878. Life Herdman was born in Rattray near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. He is known to have originally studied divinity at the University of St. Andrews but abandoned this and came to Edinburgh in 1847 to train under Robert Scott Lauder as an artist. He was a friend of Professor John Stuart Blackie, who instilled in him a love of the Celtic Revival reflected in his later works. ... Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, 1st Earl of Midlothian, (7 May 1847 – 21 May 1929) was a British Liberal Party politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from March 1894 to June 1895. Between the death of his father, in 1851, and the death of his grandfather, the 4th Earl of Rosebery, in 1868, he was known by the courtesy title of Lord Dalmeny. Rosebery first came to national attention in 1879 by sponsoring the successful Midlothian campaign of William Ewart Gladstone. He briefly was in charge of Scottish affairs. His most successful performance in office came as chairman of the London County Council in 1889. He entered the cabinet in 1885 and served twice as foreign minister, paying special attention to French and German affairs. Sir Henry William Primrose (22 August 1846 – 17 June 1923) was a Scottish civil servant. He joined HM Treasury, the Treasury in 1869, served as private secretary to the Viceroy of India from 1880 to 1884 and to William Ewart Gladstone, Gladstone in 1886. He was secretary of the Office of Works from 1887 to 1895. He became chairman of the Board of the Inland Revenue from 1899 to 1907. In his youth, he made one appearance for the Scottish association football, football XI against England in the England v Scotland representative matches (1870–1872), representative match played in November 1870. Thomas Anson, 1st Viscount Anson (14 February 1767 – 31 July 1818) was a British politician and peer from the Anson family. Background and career Thomas Anson was born 14 February 1767, the first son of George Anson, of Shugborough and Mary Vernon, the daughter of George Venables Vernon. The family's surname was Adams until 1773, when his father inherited the Anson estates upon the death of his maternal uncles and his unmarried older brother, Thomas. He was the brother of Mary Anson (born 1759), who married Sir Francis Ford, 1st Baronet, in 1785. Thomas's brothers included army generals Sir George Anson and Sir William Anson. He was educated at Eton College in 1779 and Oriel College, Oxford, in 1784.
