East Marden
East Marden is a village on the spur of the South Downs in the Chichester district of West Sussex, England. It is within the civil parish of Marden, West Sussex. It is first mentioned in the Domesday Book as Meredone and was given in 1086 to Roger, Earl of Montgomery. The church, St Peters (UK Ordnance Survey grid reference SU807145), dates from the 12th century and is still used for worship every other Sunday. Its oldest house today dates back to 1728 ( Salzman, 1953). The village, some 100 metres above sea level, is in an area of unusually high rainfall. Its most famous landmark is the thatched well on the village green. 2009 West Sussex County Council Election
The West Sussex County Council election, 2009 were elections to West Sussex County Council which took place on 4 June 2009, having been delayed from 7 May, in order to coincide with elections to the European Parliament. The elections saw the Conservative Party retain overall control, having done so since 1997. On this occasion they gained two seats and saw their vote share increase by just over 5%. The Liberal Democrats strengthened their position as the main opposition party, gaining a net total of four seats, despite their own share of the vote falling by nearly 4%. The Labour Party lost five of the seven seats they had held before the election, and saw their vote fall by nearly 10%, broadly in line with their national decline. This decline saw the party fall to fourth place in the county in terms of the popular vote, being replaced in third by the UK Independence Party, who are likely to have benefited by voting being held alongside the European Parliament elections. The West Sussex County Council election, 2013 took place on 2 May 2013, as part of the 2013 United Kingdom local elections. All 71 electoral divisions were up for election, which returned one county councillor each by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office. At this election, the Conservative Party was seeking to retain overall control of the council, and the Liberal Democrats to maintain their position as the main opposition party. Thorney Island (West Sussex)
Thorney Island is an island (effectively a peninsula) that juts into Chichester Harbour in West Sussex. It is separated from the mainland by a narrow channel called the Great Deep. Geography The village of West Thorney lies on the east coast of the island and has been incorporated into a British Army military base which occupies the southern part of the island, south of Great Deep. A coastal public footpath, part of the Sussex Border Path encircles the island, but public access to the south of the island is limited to the footpath and the church of St Nicholas at West Thorney. Walkers using the footpath may be asked by intercom to provide their contact details (name, address and mobile phone number) at the security gates to access the southern part of the island.
