Boulder Choke
A boulder choke is a collection of large rocks or rubble that obstructs a shaft or passage in a cave or mine. In order to progress through passages cavers often need to negotiate or clear boulder chokes. Boulder chokes can be formed by rockfall, stream deposition, or mining debris. Due to the nature of their formation boulder chokes may be unstable and can prove difficult to navigate and map due to their complexity. In order to clear a boulder choke the rocks obstructing the passage may need to be removed, often requiring breaking up first either mechanically or using a small explosive. The Three Counties System became the longest cave in the UK when cavers succeeded in clearing a route through a boulder choke for to connect two known cave systems, an exercise that took three years. Boulder chokes can be hazardous, as unstable boulders can unexpectedly move, potentially crushing or trapping cavers. In May 1988, for example, three cavers were killed in a boulder choke in Ease Gil ...

Caving
Caving – also known as spelunking in the United States and Canada and potholing in the United Kingdom and Ireland – is the recreational pastime of exploring wild cave systems (as distinguished from show caves). In contrast, speleology is the scientific study of caves and the cave environment.Caving in New Zealand
(from Te Ara: The Encyclopedia of New Zealand, Accessed 2012-11.)
The challenges involved in caving vary according to the cave being visited; in addition to the total absence of light beyond the entrance, negotiating pitches, squeezes,

Three Counties System
The Three Counties System is a set of inter-connected limestone solutional cave systems spanning the borders of Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire in the north of England. The possibility of connecting a number of discrete cave systems in the area to create a single super-system that spans the county borders was first proposed by Dave Brook in 1968, and it was achieved in 2011. The system is currently over long, making it the longest in the UK and the thirtieth longest in the world, and there continues to be scope for considerably extending the system. Description The Three Counties System's most southerly entrance is currently Large Pot (, NGR SD 6281 7685) on the northerly flank of Kingsdale in North Yorkshire, and the most northerly entrance is currently Bull Pot of the Witches (, NGR SD 6623 8131) beneath Barbon Low Fell in Cumbria – a distance of almost . Between the two, the system passes beneath Ireby Fell and Leck Fell which are in Lancashire. The system runs ...

Ease Gill Caverns
The Ease Gill Cave System is the longest, and most complex cave system in Britain as of 2011, with around of passages, including connections only passable by cave diving. It spans the valley between Leck Fell and Casterton Fell. The water resurges into Leck Beck. The first-discovered entrance, Lancaster Hole, was found by George Cornes and Bill Taylor on 29 September 1946. A small draughting opening on Casterton Fell, Cumbria, opened immediately onto a shaft. Passages from the base of the shaft were explored over the succeeding weeks and months by members of the British Speleological Association, including Jim Eyre. The underground course of the Ease Gill (the local master cave) and high-level fossil passages above it were found and followed upstream to a series of complex inlet passages. In succeeding years, these have been connected to surface caves, including Top Sinks, County Pot and Pool Sink. The cave passages adjoining the Ease Gill main streamway were connected to ...

Langcliffe Pot
Langcliffe Pot is a cave system on the slopes of Great Whernside in Upper Wharfedale, about SSE of Kettlewell in North Yorkshire. It is part of the Black Keld Site of Special Scientific Interest where the "underground drainage system which feeds the stream resurgence at Black Keld is one of the largest and deepest in Britain, although only a small proportion of its cave passages are accessible at present." Mossdale Caverns is also part of the Black Keld SSSI. Although a considerable length of passage has been explored in Langcliffe Pot, the current end is over above the resurgence, and over in distance. A trip to the far end has been described as "one of the most serious undertakings in British caving". Description The entrance lies within a shakehole where a small hole between blocks leads to a ledge at the top of a shaft. This lands in a chamber with a narrow rift passage leading off which degenerates into the Craven Crawl, of low, wet passage. At a junction with an ...
