Bouasone Bouphavanh
Bouasone Bouphavanh ( Lao: ບົວສອນ ບູບຜາວັນ; born 3 June 1954) is a Laotian politician who was Prime Minister of Laos from 2006 to 2010. He was officially appointed to the office by the National Assembly of Laos on 8 June 2006, during a major government reshuffle. He replaced Bounnhang Vorachith who became vice president. Bouasone had previously served as first deputy prime minister since October 3, 2003. Before that, he was third deputy prime minister and was president of the State Planning Committee. He ranks seventh in the Politburo. He was replaced as Prime Minister on 23 December 2010 by Thongsing Thammavong. Now, Bouasone Bouphavanh currently serves as head of the Lao Party Central Committee's Commission for Economic Development Strategy Research. The Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, formerly the chairman of the Council of Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is the head of government of Laos. The highest position in the government, they direct the country's executive branch. The prime minister is accountable to the president, the National Assembly and the country's only legal party: the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP). The current prime minister is Phankham Viphavanh, who was elected in 2021. The Kingdom of Luang Phrabang was the first Laotian state to establish the office of prime minister. The 8th National Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party was held in Vientiane from 18–21 March 2006. The congress occurs once every five years. A total of 498 delegates represented the party's 148,590 card-carrying members. Central Committee composition The 8th Congress elected the 8th Central Committee, in which 55 officials were elected to a seat. An estimated 40 percent of the members of the 7th Central Committee retired from active politics, and were succeeded by 19 officials from wide ethnic backgrounds. The average age of the new members was 51, versus 60 for the older members. Of the 19, six of them had doctorates, with the majority having doctorates in Marxist–Leninist studies. The majority of them had either a background from the Political Department of the Lao People's Army or from the party's Central School. The Politburo of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) is the highest decision-making organ when the Central Committee is not convened for a plenary session. History The Politburo of the Central Committee was established at the 2nd LPRP National Congress, held on 3–6 February 1972. Seven members were elected to the first Politburo, known as the 2nd Politburo. Of these seven members four concurrently served as members of the 2nd Secretariat.
