James Addison Baker ("the elder") (March 3, 1821 – February 24, 1897) was a state legislator, state judge, and a lawyer. He is the first of four generations of persons named James Addison Baker, all of whom practiced law. He was known as "Judge Baker" after 1864. His son, also named James A. Baker (born 1857), James A. Baker, was a personal attorney for William Marsh Rice; and his great-grandson is James Baker, former President's Chief of Staff and former Secretary of State. Elbert Dysart Botts (January 2, 1893 – April 10, 1962) was the California Department of Transportation (''Caltrans'') engineer credited with overseeing the research that led to the development of '' Botts' dots'' and possibly the epoxy used to attach them to the road. Botts was born in Missouri in 1893 and was a professor of chemistry at San Jose State College when he was recruited to Caltrans. He is credited with leading the division of the Caltrans research laboratory (Translab) that conducted the initial research into identifying the best shapes and materials for raised pavement markers. Much of the necessary field research was conducted by his team on a new freeway in West Sacramento in the spring of 1955. Although the initial goal was to improve lane visibility, it was at this point that the tactile feedback provided by the dots was discovered. John Minor Botts (September 16, 1802 – January 8, 1869) was a nineteenth-century politician, planter and lawyer from Virginia. He was a prominent Unionist in Richmond, Virginia, during the American Civil War. Early and family life Botts was born in Dumfries, Virginia, to prominent lawyer Benjamin Gaines Botts (1776 - 1811) and his wife Jane Tyler Botts (1782 - 1811). Both of his parents died in the Richmond Theatre fire on 26 December 1811, so John and his siblings were raised by relatives in Fredericksburg. ''Gasterophilus intestinalis'', also known as horse bot fly, is a species of insect of the family Oestridae, and is found worldwide. The adults, which have a bumblebee-like appearance, are prominently active in the summer. ''G. intestinalis'' is primarily a parasite of horses, mules and donkeys. Identification The eggs of ''G. intestinalis'' are pale yellow in color, and long. The larvae are yellow or tan. Adults, which are long, look superficially like hairy bumblebees, with a noticeable ovipositor at the end of the abdomen. Life cycle The female fly cements individual eggs onto hairs of the forelimbs and shoulders of horses, mules and donkeys. Each female lays up to 1000 eggs.
