Botswana At The 2007 All-Africa Games
Botswana competed in the 2007 All-Africa Games held at the Stade du 5 Juillet in the city of Algiers, Algeria. The country came ninth with a total of thirteen medals. The team was particularly successful in athletics, winning five gold medals in track and field events as well as beating the continental record in the T46 200 metres sprint. Background Botswana first competed the All Africa Games in 1991 and increasingly saw the event as an opportunity to demonstrate its prowess in sport. Its investment paid off and the team returned from each successive event with medals. In 2000, Botswana put a bid in to host the 2007 Games but was unsuccessful, being beaten by Algeria. Botswana National Olympic Committee
Botswana National Olympic Committee is the National Olympic Committee representing Botswana. It is also the body responsible for Botswana's representation at the Commonwealth Games. The Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) has facilitated Botswana's participation at the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 and the country has never missed an edition since then. Botswana recorded their best performance at the Summer Olympic Games in London in 2012, when Nijel Amos won the country their only medal to date, a silver medal. While Botswana did not win any medal at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010, the country performed well in the 2nd edition in Nanjing China, where they won two (2) silver medals, which performance was the fourth best by an African country at the Games. Gable Garenamotse
Gable Garenamotse (born February 28, 1977 in Gumare, North-West) is a Botswana long jumper, who has won two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games. In 1999 Garenamotse won the triple jump at the African Southern Region Championships, and participated in both long jump and triple jump at the World Championships. Having peaked at a 16.66 metres jump that year, a national record, he decided to concentrate on long jump from thereon. His first international medal was a bronze at the 21st Universiade in 2001. At the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester Garenamotse placed second. He competed at the 2004 Olympics, without reaching the final. Obakeng Ambrose Ngwigwa (born 9 July 1985 in Serowe) is a Botswana sprinter. He won the bronze medal over 400 metres at the 2004 World Junior Championships in Athletics with a personal best and national junior record of 45.97 seconds. Isaac Makwala (born 24 September 1985) is a Botswana sprinter who specializes in the 400 metres. Career He was the gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games in 2018. He has also won continental titles at the distance, winning at the 2015 African Games and twice at the African Championships in Athletics (2012, 2014). California Molefe (born 12 March 1980) is a Botswana runner who won a silver medal in 400 metres at the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Moscow, becoming the first Botswana athlete to win a major international medal. Amantle Montsho (born July 4, 1983) is a female sprinter from Botswana who specializes in the 400 metres. She represented her country at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics, reaching the final at the latter edition. She was the first woman to represent Botswana at the Olympics. The athletics competition at the 2007 All-Africa Games was held on the Stade 5 Juillet 1962 in Algiers, Algeria between 18 July and 22 July 2007. Nigeria was the most successful nation of the competition having won nine golds and 24 medals in total. South Africa was a close second with seven golds and also a total of 24 medals overall. Tunisia and Botswana were the next most successful (both with five golds), although Ethiopia and Kenya had greater medal hauls.
