Boston, Sleaford And Midland Counties Railway
The Boston, Sleaford and Midland Counties Railway opened a railway line between Grantham and Boston, Lincolnshire, Boston, through Sleaford, England. It opened in two stages, in 1857 and 1859. Although not a major line, it formed part of a route from industrial cities in the East Midlands to Lincolnshire seaside resorts, and a major seasonal traffic developed in the twentieth century. Grantham
Grantham () is a market and industrial town in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, situated on the banks of the River Witham and bounded to the west by the A1 road. It lies some 23 miles (37 km) south of the Lincoln and 22 miles (35 km) east of Nottingham. The population in 2016 was put at 44,580. The town is the largest settlement and the administrative centre of South Kesteven District. Grantham was the birthplace of the UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Royal Air Force Cranwell or more simply RAF Cranwell is a Royal Air Force station in Lincolnshire, England, close to the village of Cranwell, near Sleaford. Cranwell Branch
The Cranwell branch was a military branch line railway in Lincolnshire, England. It connected the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) at Cranwell to the main line at Sleaford. It opened in 1917 from Sleaford railway station and it joined the Great Northern Railway. RNAS Cranwell was intended for training pilots and aircrew during the First World War. Control soon passed to the Royal Air Force in 1918, and the location became known as RAF Cranwell. A public passenger service was operated from the outset, and there were three stations on the branch. Bourne And Sleaford Railway
The Bourne and Sleaford Railway was promoted as a branch of the Great Northern Railway to fend off an expected incursion by the rival Great Eastern Railway. It was authorised by Parliament in 1865, but not opened until 1871 (part way) and 1872. Although agricultural traffic provided healthy business, the rural character of the line never produced much passenger trade, and it was closed to passengers in 1930. The line was severed and ceased to be a through line in 1956 and closed completely in 1965. Origin In the 1860s the Great Eastern Railway was pressing for powers to build northwards from March, to increase its share of the lucrative transport of Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire coal to the south. Bourne is a market town and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. Grantham And Lincoln Railway Line
The Grantham and Lincoln railway line was a line in Lincolnshire, built by the Great Northern Railway to shorten the distance between the town of Grantham and city of Lincoln. It had already formed a network in Lincolnshire, but the route from London and points south and west of Grantham was very indirect. The line opened 1867, and was 18 miles in length, from Honington, near Grantham to Pelham Street Junction in Lincoln. Running through rural terrain, it was never heavily developed, and after nationalisation, through traffic was concentrated on a better alternative route via Newark. All local stations except Leadenham closed in 1962, and the line from Honington to Lincoln closed completely in 1965.
