Bosko
Bosko is an animated cartoon character created by animators Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising. Bosko was the first recurring character in Leon Schlesinger's cartoon series and was the star of 39 ''Looney Tunes'' shorts released by Warner Bros. He was voiced by Carman Maxwell, Johnny Murray, and Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas during the 1920s and 1930s and once by Don Messick during the 1990s. Creation and the first film In 1927, Harman and Ising were still working for the Walt Disney Studios on a series of live-action/animated short subjects known as the Alice Comedies. The two animators created Bosko in 1928 to capitalize on the new "talkie" craze that was sweeping the motion picture industry. Harman And Ising
Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising were an American animation team known for founding the Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer animation studios. Early history Harman and Ising first worked in animation in the early 1920s at Laugh-O-Gram Studio, Walt Disney's studio in Kansas City. When Disney moved operations to California, Harman, Ising, and fellow animator Carman Maxwell stayed behind to try to start their own studio. Their plans went nowhere, however, and the men soon rejoined Disney to work on his ''Alice Comedies'' and '' Oswald the Lucky Rabbit'' films. It was during this time that Harman and Ising developed a style of cartoon drawing that would later be closely associated with, and credited to, Disney. Rudolf Carl Ising (August 7, 1903 – July 18, 1992) was an American animator best known for collaborating with Hugh Harman to establish the Warner Bros. and MGM Cartoon studios during the early years of the golden age of American animation. In 1940, Ising produced William Hanna and Joseph Barbera's first cartoon, '' Puss Gets the Boot'', a cartoon featuring characters later known as Tom and Jerry. Personal life Ising was born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 7, 1903. He was married twice, first to Maxine Jennings between 1936 until their divorce in 1940, and later to Cynthia Westlake from 1941 until his death , with whom he had a son, Rudolf Ising, Jr. Ising died of cancer in Newport Beach on 18 July 1992 and is buried at Pacific View Memorial Park in California. Johnny Murray (voice Actor)
Johnny Murray (1904-1956) was an American voice actor. Before 1929, he was a cornetist at the Cocoanut Grove. In 1929, he was under a contract with First National Pictures to sing for Richard Barthelmess in his films; he provided Barthelmess's voice in ''Weary River''. He is most famous today for his role as Bosko, the first star of Warner Brothers cartoons. He was the voice actor for Bosko in the 1933 short, ''Bosko's Picture Show''. This cartoon is infamous for perhaps containing the first cartoon depiction of Adolf Hitler, and possibly of being among the first, if not first, widely distributed films that contain verbal usage of the f-bomb. Hugh Harman
Hugh Harman (August 31, 1903 – November 25, 1982) was an American animator. He was known for creating the Warner Bros. Cartoons and MGM Cartoons and his collaboration with Rudolf Ising during the golden age of American animation. Career He began his work with Walt Disney in 1922, working on Disney's early Laugh-o-Gram Cartoons. When that company went bankrupt, Harman and partner Rudolf Ising tried to start a new series based on the Arabian Nights, but were unable to obtain funding. Disney called them back when he began work for Charles Mintz, producing the Alice Comedies live-action/animation hybrid shorts and the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons. After a dispute over money, Mintz forced out Disney in 1928 and lured most of his animators, Harman and Ising included, to join him. Leon Schlesinger (May 20, 1884 – December 25, 1949) was an American film producer who founded Leon Schlesinger Productions, which later became the Warner Bros. Cartoons studio, during the Golden Age of American animation. He was a distant relative of the Warner Brothers. As head of his own studio, Schlesinger served as the producer of Warner's ''Looney Tunes'' and ''Merrie Melodies'' cartoons from 1930, when Schlesinger assumed production from his subcontractors, Harman and Ising, to 1944, when Warner acquired the studio. The company, Bosco Products, Inc., is based in Towaco, New Jersey, and products are sold throughout the United States and Europe. Carman Maxwell
Carman Griffin Maxwell (December 27, 1902 – September 22, 1987) was an American animator and voice actor. Maxwell was born in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and later moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He began his career at Walt Disney, where Maxwell, along with Hugh Harman, Rudolf Ising, and Friz Freleng, was part of the unit that eventually broke away from Disney to form the nucleus of what later became the Warner Bros. animation studio (under contract with Leon Schlesinger). The ''Alice Comedies'' are a series of animated/live-action shorts created by Walt Disney in the 1920s, in which a live action little girl named Alice (originally played by Virginia Davis) and an animated cat named Julius have adventures in an animated landscape. ''Alice's Wonderland'' Disney, Ub Iwerks, and their staff made the first ''Alice Comedy'', a one-reel (ten-minute) 1923 short subject titled ''Alice's Wonderland'', while still heading the failing Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri. ''Alice's Wonderland'' begins with Alice entering a cartoon studio to witness cartoons being created. Alice is amazed by what she sees: the cartoon characters come to life and play around.
