The Borger Gassers were a minor league baseball team that operated in the West Texas–New Mexico League 1937 through 1954 with a break from 1943 to 1945 due to World War II. West Texas–New Mexico League
The West Texas–New Mexico League was a minor league baseball league that operated from 1937 through 1955, with a hiatus from 1943 to 1945 during World War II. The league started as a Class D level league, upgraded to Class C in 1946 and then a final advancement to Class B level status in 1955. League franchises were based exclusively in New Mexico and Texas. History The West Texas–New Mexico League began play in 1937 as a Class D level league, with Milton Price serving as president. The Hobbs Drillers, Midland Cardinals, Monahans Trojans, Odessa Oilers, Roswell Sunshiners and Wink Spudders were the charter members in beginning league play on May 4, 1937. The Lubbock Hubbers (1938, 1939, 1947), Albuquerque Dukes (1949, 1950, 1953) and Pampa Oilers (1946, 1954, 1955) each won three league championships. Eddie Carnett
Edwin Elliott Carnett (October 21, 1916 – November 4, 2016) was an American left fielder and pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for three different teams from 1941 to 1945. Listed at , , he batted and threw left-handed. He was born in Springfield, Missouri. Baseball career Carnett was noticed by big league scouts when he was pitching in high school. He was signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1935, assigned to the Class C Ponca City Angels of the Western Association in his hometown, Ponca City, Oklahoma, and won 19 games. In 1936, he was in spring training with the Los Angeles Angels, the Cubs' top farm club in the Pacific Coast League, but an accident during a "pepper" game led to a serious shoulder injury that jeopardized his career. He was reassigned back to Ponca City, pitched with the injury and lost ten straight games, took off some time to work on his hitting, and then won 16 consecutive games. Gordon Nell
Gordon Nell (August 17, 1907 – May 22, 1986) was a minor league baseball player who hit over 350 career home runs. He won five home run titles and a Triple Crown. He was born in Hollis, Oklahoma. His professional career began in either 1929 or 1930, when he played for the Joplin Miners and Muskogee Chiefs; he led the Western Association with 27 home runs and also hit .351 with 107 runs scored. He hit 38 home runs with the Chiefs in 1931, again leading the league in homers. He also hit a home run in a brief stay with the Minneapolis Millers. After hitting 23 home runs between 1932 and 1933, Nell left professional baseball, not playing from 1934 to 1938. In 1939, the outfielder returned, playing for the Pampa Oilers of the West Texas–New Mexico League. He would spend most of the rest of his career in the WTNML. Borger, Texas
Borger ( ) is the largest city in Hutchinson County, Texas, United States. The population was 12,551 at the 2020 census. Borger is named for businessman Asa Philip "Ace" Borger, who also established the Hutchinson County seat of Stinnett and several other small towns in Texas and Oklahoma. History Ace Borger and his business partner John R. Miller purchased a townsite near the Canadian River in March 1926 after the discovery of oil in the vicinity. Within a few months, the boomtown had swollen to a population of 45,000, most lured by sensational advertising and " black gold". In October 1926, the city charter was adopted, and Miller was elected mayor.
