Boquerón Bay
Boquerón Bay (Spanish: ''Bahía de Boquerón'') is a bay of the Mona Passage located on the coast of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. El Poblado de Boquerón, or just Boquerón for short, located in the '' barrio'' of the same name, is the main settlement located along the bay. The bay is a major tourist destination as it hosts the Boquerón Beach (''Balneario de Boquerón'') and Los Pozos Beach. International Space Station
The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest modular space station currently in low Earth orbit. Boquerón is a barrio in the municipality of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 5,373. The village of Boquerón, located on the Boquerón Bay is one of the main tourist attractions in the southwestern part of the island. In 2000, its population was 4,963. History Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of Boquerón was 1,185. Mona Passage
The Mona Passage ( es, Canal de la Mona) is a strait that separates the islands of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. The Mona Passage connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea and is an important shipping route between the Atlantic and the Panama Canal. The Mona Passage is 80 miles (130 kilometer). It is fraught with variable tidal currents created by large islands on either side of it, and by sand banks that extend out from both coasts. El Poblado de Boquerón (Spanish language, Spanish for ''the settlement of Boquerón, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, Boquerón'') is a coastal village which represents the downtown or main urban nucleus of the ''Barrios of Puerto Rico, barrio'' (district) Boquerón, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, Boquerón of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, Cabo Rojo, located on the northeast of Boquerón Bay. Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge (Spanish: ''Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre de Cabo Rojo'') is an 1,836-acre National Wildlife Refuge located in southwestern Puerto Rico, in the municipality of Cabo Rojo. The refuge is a habitat for number of native bird species including the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbird, locally known as ''mariquita de Puerto Rico'' or ''capitán''. Many birds find their way to the refuge while migrating between North and South America, and more than 118 bird species have been recorded near the area. The Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is administered as part of the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife complex. Boquerón State Forest
Boquerón State Forest (Spanish: ''Bosque Estatal de Boquerón'') is one of the 20 forestry units that make up the public forest system of Puerto Rico. Despite its name, the Boquerón State Forest is not only located in Boquerón, Cabo Rojo but also spans almost 5,000 acres across the municipalities of Cabo Rojo, Lajas and Mayagüez. The forest area is also known for its limestone cliffs, the lighthouse, and the salt flats which have been a source of salt since the pre-Hispanic era and, dating to 700 C.E., they are considered to be one of the oldest industries in the Americas. Tourism In Puerto Rico
Tourism in Puerto Rico attracted 3.7 million visitors in 2019 and 1.0 million visitors in 2015, a notable increase from the average of 2010–2014 at 3.1 million. Tourism has been a very important source of revenue for Puerto Rico for a number of decades given it is host to diverse natural wonders, cultural and historical buildings, concerts and sporting events. Visitors from the United States do not need a passport to enter Puerto Rico and the ease of travel attracts many tourists from the mainland United States each year.
