Booth Library
Mary J. Booth Library, named after University Librarian Mary Josephine Booth, serves the students, faculty and staff of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. History Beginning of library services The first library at Eastern Illinois University opened in 1899 and was located in two rooms on the first floor of Old Main. This first library covered and contained 2,500 volumes. By 1920, the Library had expanded to include a storage area on the fifth floor and the reading room covered part of a hallway. Two additional rooms were added in 1934. Booth Library Mary Josephine Booth, who became University Librarian in 1904, lobbied for a free-standing library building for many years. In the early 1940s, the new building was approved and architect Joseph Booton drew up the plans. Charleston, Illinois
Charleston is a city in, and the county seat of, Coles County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,286, as of the 2020 census. The city is home to Eastern Illinois University and has close ties with its neighbor, Mattoon. Both are principal cities of the Charleston–Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Native Americans lived in the Charleston area for thousands of years before the first European settlers arrived. With the great tallgrass prairie to the west, beech-maple forests to the east, and the Embarras River and Wabash Rivers between, the Charleston area provided semi-nomadic Indians access to a variety of resources. Indians may have deliberately set the "wildfires" which maintained the local mosaic of prairie and oak–hickory forest. Streams with names such as 'Indian Creek' and 'Kickapoo Creek' mark the sites of former Indian settlements. Mary Josephine Booth
Mary Josephine Booth (1876–1965) headed the library at Eastern Illinois University for 41 years, from 1904 to 1945. Booth was the third University Librarian, following Ella F. Corwin (1899–1900) and Florence M. Beck (1900–1904). Service in World War I On November 27, 1917 Miss Booth arrived in France as a volunteer to serve with the American Red Cross. In May, 1918, she transferred to work with the American Library Association. While working with the ALA, Booth classified the library in General Pershing's headquarters at Chaumont. In Germany, she took charge of the library in the Festhalle in Koblenz. Booth was the only EIU faculty member to serve overseas during World War I. Eastern Illinois University is a public university in Charleston, Illinois. Established in 1895 as the Eastern Illinois State Normal School, a teacher's college offering a two-year degree, Eastern Illinois University gradually expanded into a comprehensive university with a broad curriculum, including bachelor's and master's degrees in education, business, arts, sciences, and humanities. History Eastern Illinois Normal School was established by the Illinois State Legislature in 1895 "to train teachers for the schools of East Central Illinois." A 40-acre campus was acquired in Charleston and the first building was commissioned. When the school began classes in 1899, there were 125 students and an 18-member faculty.
