BooksActually
BooksActually is an independent bookstore operating online. It was formerly located in Singapore's Tiong Bahru district till 2020. History and description BooksActually was established by Kenny Leck and Karen Wai in 2005 on the second floor of a shophouse along Telok Ayer Street with capital pooled from savings and family. The bookstore subsequently moved to Ann Siang Hill in 2007, and opened a second outlet at Club Street in 2008. Due to an increase in rent, they closed up Ann Siang Hill and moved from Club Street to Yong Siak Street in Tiong Bahru in 2011. BooksActually regularly hosts literary events including book launches and poetry readings, acoustic sessions, and mini exhibitions. In 2011, the bookstore organised the exhibition ''An Ode to Penguin'' held at The Arts House, that showcased over 1,000 Penguin Books from their private collection. Desmond Kon
Desmond Kon Zhicheng-Mingdé (born 1980) is a poet, former journalist, interdisciplinary artist and founder of Squircle Line Press. He has authored six poetry collections, an epistolary novel, and edited more than fifteen books. He has an MFA in creative writing, and is also an avid potter. Desmond studied sociology and mass communication at the National University of Singapore. He went on to receive his theology masters (world religions) from Harvard University and fine arts masters (creative writing) from the University of Notre Dame. He was trained in book publishing at Stanford University. In 2014, he won the Poetry World Cup while representing Singapore. He is the curator of the "eye feel write" ekphrastic collaboration between the Singapore Writers Festival, the Singapore Arts Museum and the National Gallery Singapore. The Lover's Inventory
''The Lover's Inventory'' is a poetry collection by the Singaporean poet Cyril Wong inventorying objects, places, sensations, and other memorabilia that serve as springboards for memory and philosophical insight; its Confessional verse "confesses without dreary interrogation...in which masks slip on and off in pure, poetic theatre", while the poetry's openness has been transformed into "a defiant act against cultural hypocrisy." The book is "a self-portrait built out of an inventory of intimacies", offering "a critical and tender exploration of how love and sex both help and prevent us from fully understanding ourselves and each other." Joshua Ip
Joshua Ip (born 1982, Singapore) is a Singaporean poet, and writer. Biography Joshua Ip attended Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and Raffles Junior College before completing a degree in Creative Writing at the University of Pennsylvania. He was mentored by Lee Tzu Pheng and Heng Siok Tian. Works Ip has published four volumes of poetry with Math Paper Press and edited nine anthologies. His first collection, "sonnets from the singlish" (Math Paper Press, 2013) co-won the Singapore Literature Prize in 2014. The collection has been referred to in The Straits Times as "a playful subversion of the form's rhythm and rhymes". Ip's work in "sonnets from the singlish" has been described as building "a distinctly contemporary Singapore slant through the formalism of his verse", and " isgreatest strength lies in crafting these absurd scenarios, which vividly and concisely capture the gist of his philosophising." The Singapore Literature Prize (abbreviation: SLP) is a biennial award in Singapore to recognise outstanding published works by Singaporean authors in any of the four official languages: Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil. Alfian Sa'at
Alfian bin Sa'at (born 18 July 1977), best known as Alfian Sa'at, is a prolific Singaporean playwright, poet, and writer. He is known for penning a body of plays, poems, and prose that often tackle issues considered taboo in the island-state, such as race, sexuality, and politics. Alfian has received a number of national literature awards, such as the 2001 Young Artist Award and three ''Life!'' Theatre Awards for Best Original Script. Alvin Pang
Alvin Pang (Chinese: 冯啟明; pinyin: ''Féng Qǐ Míng''; born 1972, Singapore) was named 2005 Young Artist of the Year (Literature) by the National Arts Council Singapore. He holds a First Class Honours degree in English literature from the University of York and an Honorary Fellowship in Writing from the University of Iowa's International Writing Program (2002). In 2020, he was awarded a PhD in Writing from RMIT University, and appointed to the honorary position of Adjunct Professor of RMIT University in 2021.
