Bonny Light Horseman (album)
''Bonny Light Horseman'' is the debut album by American folk supergroup Bonny Light Horseman, released on January 24, 2020. Recording began at the site of the defunct Rundfunk der DDR and concluded in January 2019 at Dreamland Recording Studios near Woodstock, New York. Upon release, the album was met with mostly positive reviews, and debuted at 92 on ''Billboard'''s Top Album Sales chart. The album's title track reprises a Napoleonic Wars-era English lament. Eric D. Johnson joined singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and multi-instrumentalist Josh Kaufman to form Bonny Light Horseman after learning they were reworking folk songs. Mitchell had previously researched Greek mythology for her Broadway musical Hadestown and solo album of the same name. Bonny Light Horseman is an American folk band consisting of Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats, The Shins), and Josh Kaufman ( The National, Hiss Golden Messenger, Josh Ritter). They released their debut eponymous album in January 2020. Their second album, ''Rolling Golden Holy'', came out in October 2022. Background The band first came together at the Eaux Claires festival in 2018 when invited by the festival's co-founders Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) and Aaron Dessner (of The National). From the early sessions for this performance, the trio decided to form the band in a more official capacity. Their self-titled debut album was released on January 25, 2020. Hadestown
''Hadestown'' is a musical with music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell. It tells a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young girl looking for something to eat, goes to work in a hellish industrial underworld to escape mythically-inspired climate-change induced poverty before her poor singer-songwriter lover Orpheus comes to rescue her, and together they show others the way to escape. The original version of the musical premiered in the town of Barre, Vermont, in 2006. There was also a production in Vergennes in the same year and a tour between Vermont and Massachusetts in 2007. Then Mitchell, unsure about the future of the musical, turned it into a concept album, released in 2010. "Children, Go Where I Send Thee" (alternatively "Children, Go Where I Send You" or variations thereof, also known as "The Holy Baby", "Little Bitty Baby", or "Born in Bethlehem") is a traditional African-American spiritual song. "The Water Is Wide" (also called "O Waly, Waly" or simply "Waly, Waly") is a folk song of Scottish origin. It remains popular in the 21st century. Cecil Sharp published the song in ''Folk Songs From Somerset'' (1906). Themes and construction The imagery of the lyrics describes the challenges of love: "Love is handsome, love is kind" during the novel honeymoon phase of any relationship. However, as time progresses, "love grows old, and waxes cold." Even true love, the lyrics say, can "fade away like morning dew." The modern lyric for "The Water Is Wide" was consolidated and named by Cecil Sharp in 1906 from multiple older sources in southern England, following English lyrics with very different stories and styles but the same meter. Justin DeYarmond Edison Vernon (born April 30, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. He is best known as the primary songwriter and frontman of indie folk band Bon Iver. Known for his distinct falsetto voice, He is also a member of the bands Volcano Choir, Big Red Machine, the Shouting Matches, and Gayngs. He was previously a member of the now-defunct band DeYarmond Edison. Vernon has received widespread acclaim for his work, predominantly with Bon Iver.
