''Knockout'' was a weekly British comics periodical published by Fleetway Publications from 12 June 1971 to 23 June 1973. A humour comic, the title ran until 1973 before being merged with another Fleetway title, '' Whizzer and Chips''. Stories Its strips included: * ''Beat Your Neighbour'': two families live next door to each other; although the introductory title picture shows them arguing, the two families often tried to be pleasant to one another while secretly trying to outdo each other. The results were quite often far-fetched but unexpected. Trevor Metcalfe
Trevor Metcalfe (born May 1939 in Brotton, Yorkshire) is a British illustrator and comic book artist. Known for his comic strips in IPC Magazines comics such as Sweet Tooth and Junior Rotter in '' Whizzer and Chips''. Influences include Leo Baxendale, Reg Parlett and Walt Disney. Biography Metcalfe became interested in drawing at age eight during a stay in hospital. His main influence being sports cartoonist Tom Webster. He first submitted work to his local newspaper alongside art school mate Robert Nixon. After his National Service he obtained work for DC Thomson drawing his own strip Babes and Bullies for '' The Dandy Annual''. In ''Whizzer and Chips'' he drew for many years his most famous characters Junior Rotter The strip was about a boy called Junior Rotter (or J.R.) who is always scheming up plans which generally fail. Fleetway And IPC Comics Titles
Fleetway Publications was a magazine publishing company based in London. It was founded in 1959 when the Mirror Group acquired the Amalgamated Press, then based at Fleetway House, Farringdon Street, London. It was one of the companies that merged into the IPC group in 1963, and the Fleetway banner continued to be used until 1968 when all IPC's publications were reorganised into the unitary IPC Magazines. In 1987 IPC's comics line was sold to Robert Maxwell as Fleetway Publications. Egmont UK bought Fleetway from Maxwell in 1991, merging it with their own comics publishing operation, London Editions, to form Fleetway Editions, but the name "Fleetway" ceased to appear on their comics some time after 2002. ''Pow!'' was a weekly British comic book published by Odhams Press' Power Comics imprint in 1967 and 1968. Like other Power Comics, ''Pow!'' featured a mixture of British strips with reprints from American Marvel Comics, including Spider-Man, Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD and the Fantastic Four. It is unrelated to '' POW! Entertainment'', an American media production company. Publication history The Power Comics imprint was led by a three-man editorial team, known as Alf, Bart, and Cos. Alfred Wallace ("Alf") was the Managing Editor at Odhams, and supervised the entire Power Comics line. Under his direction, Bart and Cos were the staff editors who handled the individual titles. ''Wham!'' was a weekly British comics magazine published by Odhams Press. It ran for 187 issues from 20 June 1964 to 13 January 1968, when it merged into its sister title '' Pow!'' Created by veteran cartoonist Leo Baxendale, ''Wham!'' was structured like a typical British comic in the mould of '' The Beano'', but it was distinguished by "a racy and anarchic new breed" of humour that inspired later British strips. Jack Edward Oliver (19 June 1942 – 26 May 2007) was a British cartoonist. He is more usually known as J. Edward Oliver (or JEO, or Jack). Biography JEO achieved fame in the 1970s with a long-running strip in the UK music paper '' Disc (and Music Echo)'', later ''Record Mirror''. The strip had many fans including John Lennon. It included characters from TV, film and music, with a large section for readers' contributions (Win a Plastic Warthog). Jack provided other material, including a pop-based strip calleThe Nose stories and numerous graphics. One character proved particularly enduring, a dinosaur called Fresco-Le-Raye.
