Bones Howe
Dayton Burr "Bones" Howe (born March 18, 1933) is an American record producer and recording engineer who scored a string of hits in the 1960s and 1970s, often of the sunshine pop genre, starting in 1965 with The Turtles cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe," and continuing with most of the hits of the 5th Dimension and the Association. With the exception of '' Closing Time'', he produced and engineered all of Tom Waits' releases with Asylum Records, some of which are considered among the artist's best recordings. Their almost decade-long collaboration has been described as "one of the great artist-producer partnerships". Howe performed music supervision on several feature films, and was one of the first industry members to serve as both producer and engineer of the hit records on which he worked. The Mamas & the Papas were a folk rock vocal group formed in Los Angeles, California, which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. The group consisted of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips and Canadian Denny Doherty. Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips, the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group, who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s. ''Johnny Rivers at the Whisky à Go Go'' (shown as "''At Whisky-A-Go-Go''" on the original label) is a live album and is the debut album from American rock and roll singer, songwriter and guitarist Johnny Rivers. The album was released in February 1964, just as The Beatles and the British music invasion was getting into full swing. Rivers was asked to open the Whisky a Go Go nightclub in Los Angeles starting January 15, 1964 and during that run he recorded the album. With the help of producer Lou Adler, Johnny helped introduce the "Go Go sound" to rock and roll. The album reached #13 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart, (#12 on the Billboard 200) and became Johnny's first gold album. The album also gave Rivers his very first big hit, a cover version of Chuck Berry's 1959 hit "Memphis". "Surf City" is a 1963 song recorded by American music duo Jan and Dean about a fictitious surf spot where there are "two girls for every boy". The album's two titles derive from the fact that Capitol thought this album, originally titled ''Swing Along With Me'', was so close in sound and title to Sinatra's earlier Capitol album ''Come Swing with Me!'' that the label sought, and was granted, a court order requiring Reprise to change the title of this, only his second Reprise album, to ''Sinatra Swings''. Reprise was not required to recall LPs already shipped, but had to print new labels and jackets. All compact disc releases have retained the artwork with the alternate title intact.
