David Boies (; born March 11, 1941) is an American lawyer and chairman of the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner LLP. Boies rose to national prominence for three major cases: leading the U.S. federal government's successful prosecution of Microsoft in '' United States v. Microsoft Corp.'', his unsuccessful representation of Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore in ''Bush v. Gore'', and for successful representation of the plaintiff in '' Hollingsworth v. Perry'', which invalidated California Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage. William Dayton Boies
William Dayton Boies (January 3, 1857 – May 31, 1932) was a lawyer, trial-court judge and five-term Republican U.S. Representative from Iowa's 11th congressional district in northwestern Iowa. Born on a farm in Boone County, Illinois, Boies attended country schools and the public schools of Belvidere, Illinois. He moved with his parents to Buchanan County, Iowa, in 1873 and settled near the town of Quasqueton. He was graduated in law from the University of Iowa College of Law at Iowa City in 1880. He was admitted to the bar in 1881 and commenced practice in Sanborn, in O'Brien County, Iowa. He moved to nearby Sheldon, Iowa, in 1887, where he continued the practice of law. Jeremiah Smith Boies De Veber (November 7, 1829 – June 18, 1908) was a Canadian politician and businessman. He was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The son of L.H. De Veber, he was educated in Saint John and entered his father's mercantile firm. De Veber married Elizabeth Isley in 1856. He was a director of the Bank of New Brunswick and the Rivière-du-Loop Railway. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada on December 1, 1873, as a Member of the Liberal Party of Canada to represent the riding of the City of St. John and re-elected on January 22, 1874, and defeated on September 17, 1878.
