Boekenleeuw Winners
The Boekenleeuw is a Flanders, Flemish literary award for the best book in children's literature by a Flemish author. History The ''Referendumprijs voor Vlaamse kinder- en jeugdboeken'' award was established in 1962. In 1986 this award was replaced by the Boekenleeuw and the Boekenwelp awards. The award was not given in 2017 due to reorganisation at Boek.be and due to reassessment of what awards the organisation would continue to support. The award was given again in 2018 sponsored by association of authors, composers and publishers SABAM and GAU (Groep Algemene Uitgevers). Several authors have received the award multiple times, including Bart Moeyaert (six times), Anne Provoost (three times) and Diane Broeckhoven (two times). Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem and Pat van Beirs have also won the Boekenleeuw as co-authors on two separate occasions. Monica Hughes
Monica Hughes (November 3, 1925 – March 7, 2003) was an English-Canadian author of books for children and young adults, especially science fiction. She also wrote adventure and historical novels set in Canada, and the text for some children's picture books. She may be known best for the Isis trilogy of young-adult science fiction novels (1980–1982). Life Monica Hughes lived in many different countries, including Egypt, Scotland, England and Zimbabwe. She was the daughter of Phylis Fry and E.L Ince. Both her parents worked at the University of Liverpool, where her father was a mathematician and her mother a biologist. In her school years, her teachers always encouraged her to write and join essay writing competitions. Hughes attended Edinburgh University from 1942 to 1943. Els Beerten (born 27 March 1959) is a Flemish writer of children's literature. Career Beerten made her debut in 1987 with the book ''Scènes''. In 2004, she received the Gouden Zoen award for her book ''Lopen voor je leven''. In 2009, she won the Nienke van Hichtum-prijs, the Boekenleeuw and the Gouden Boekenuil awards for her book ''Allemaal willen we de hemel'' (2008), a story that takes place during World War II. She also won the Lavki-prijs voor het Jeugdboek in 2011 and the Prijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap voor Jeugdliteratuur in 2013 for this book. Heide (; Holsatian: ''Heid'') is a town in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is the capital of the ''Kreis'' (district) Dithmarschen. Population: 21,000. The German word ''Heide'' means "heath". In the 15th century four adjoining villages decided to build a church in the "middle of the heath". This remained the town's name to date. The exact foundation date is now unknown, but by 1447 Heide was already the main village of Dithmarschen. At this time Dithmarschen was an independent peasant republic. Heide became a town in the 19th century. Heide has the largest un-built-upon market square in Germany, with 4.7 hectares. It is used primarily as a parking lot and has approximately 500 parking spaces. In 2016, the city staged 3 car-free Sundays on the market square for the first time.
