Bobsled At The 2002 Winter Olympics
Three bobsleigh events were competed at the 2002 Winter Olympics, at Utah Olympic Park. The competition took place between February 16 and February 23, 2002. For the first time since 1932, Olympic bobsleigh added a new event, with the first ever women's competition, won by Jill Bakken and Vonetta Flowers of the United States. The competitions comprised four heats. Teams raced in the first and third heats in the order of the draw. The second heat was raced in order of ranking after the first heat, and the fourth heat is raced in order of the ranking after the first three heats. Total time for the four heats determined the final rank. Utah Olympic Park
The Utah Olympic Park is a winter sports park built for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and is located in Summit County ( east of Salt Lake City) northwest of Park City, Utah, United States. During the 2002 games the park hosted the bobsleigh, skeleton, luge, ski jumping, and Nordic combined events. It still serves a training center for Olympic and development level athletes. History Like the Utah Olympic Oval and Soldier Hollow, the park was designed and built specifically for the Olympic games under the supervision of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC). The 1989 Olympic referendum, passed by Utahns, allowed for taxpayer money to fund a winter sports park, which would be used if Salt Lake City won its bid for either the 1998 or 2002 Winter Olympics; Olympic funds and revenue would then be used to repay the state. Kevin Kuske
Kevin Kuske (born 4 January 1979) is a former German bobsledder who competed from 1999 to 2018. Competing in five Winter Olympics, he is the most successful Olympic athlete in bobsledding, winning four gold medals and two silver medals. Career Prior to his bobsleigh career, Kuske was a sprinter athlete, and won a bronze medal in 4 x 100 m at the 1998 World Junior Championships in Athletics. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Kuske, along with teammates André Lange, Carsten Embach, Enrico Kühn, won the gold medal in the four-man event. Four years later in Turin, Kuske paired with Lange to win the gold medal in the two-man event, while those two, along with teammates René Hoppe and Martin Putze, won gold in the four-man event. Nicole Herschmann (born 27 October 1975 in Rudolstadt, East Germany) is a German former triple jumper and bobsledder. Susi Erdmann
Susi-Lisa Erdmann (later Plankensteiner, born 29 January 1968) is an East German-German luger and bobsledder who competed from 1977 to 1998 in luge, then since 1999 in bobsleigh. She was born in Blankenburg, Bezirk Magdeburg. Competing in five Winter Olympics, she won two medals in the women's singles luge event with a silver in 1994 and a bronze in 1992, and a bronze at the inaugural two-women bobsleigh event in 2002. Ulrike Holzner (born 18 September 1968 in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate) is a German former athlete and bobsledder who switched to the latter event in the early 2000s. Sandra Prokoff
Sandra Kiriasis ( Prokoff; born 4 January 1975 in Dresden) is a German former bobsledder who has competed from 2000 to 2014. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City she won silver in the two-woman event together with teammate Ulrike Holzner. She also competed in the bobsleigh events at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, where Kiriasis (married in late 2004) won gold in the two-woman event with teammate Anja Schneiderheinze. She finished fourth in the two-woman event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Dan Steele
Dan Steele (born March 20, 1969) is an American bobsledder and track and field athlete who competed from the early 1990s to 2002. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he won the bronze medal in the four-man event at Salt Lake City in 2002. He was recently one of the most successful collegiate track and field coaches in America. Stroke: On July 28, 2017, Steele nearly died from a massive hemorrhagic stroke. He stepped away from coaching after the stroke. Doug Sharp
Doug Sharp (born November 27, 1969, in Marion, Ohio) is an American bobsledder who competed from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. He won the bronze medal in the four-man event at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Prior to his involvement in bobsleigh, Sharp was also involved in track and field in the pole vault, barely missing the cut-off qualification for the United States Olympic trials for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He also played American football and ice hockey. At the time of the 2002 games, he also served as an assistant athletics coach for the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Mike Kohn
Michael Kohn (born May 26, 1972) is an American former bobsledder who has competed since 1990. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the four-man event at Salt Lake City in 2002 as a push athlete for pilot Brian Shimer. He also won a silver medal in the mixed bobsleigh-skeleton team event at the 2007 FIBT World Championships in St. Moritz. Kohn retired from competition after the 2010 Winter Olympics. Brian Shimer
Brian Shimer (born April 20, 1962) is an American bobsledder who competed from 1985 to 2002. Competing in five Winter Olympics, he won the bronze medal in the four-man event at Salt Lake City in 2002. Shimer also won three bronze medals at the FIBT World Championships with one in the two-man event (1997) and two in the four-man event (1993, 1997). Garrett Hines
Garrett Hines (born July 3, 1969) is an American bobsledder who has competed from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he won the silver medal in the four-man event at Salt Lake City in 2002. Hines also won a silver medal in the four-man event at the 2003 FIBT World Championships in Lake Placid, New York. Prior to his bobsleigh career, Hines also was involved in track and field as a decathlete. Additionally he played American football in high school.
