Bobbi Jene Smith
Bobbi Jene Smith (November 7, 1983) is an American dancer and actress. She was the subject of Elvira Lind's documentary Bobbi Jene about her decision to leave the prestigious Israeli dance troupe Batsheva to try to choreograph her own pieces in America. Early life and education Smith was born in Centerville, Iowa. She attended the dance division at Juilliard but did not graduate, choosing instead to drop out at the age of 21. Career Dance At the age of 21 Smith moved to Israel at the advice of Ohad Naharin where she joined the Batsheva Dance Company. She stayed in Israel dancing with Batsheva for 12 years. Film In 2012 Smith choreographed the dance piece ''Arrowed'' which she performed with actor Oscar Isaac. Isaac's girlfriend Elvira Lind was in the audience and she began a correspondence with Smith, eventually persuading Smith to let Lind film her for a documentary. Elvira Lind (born October 28, 1981) is a Danish film director based in New York City. Career In 2014, Lind's first documentary feature ''Songs for Alexis'' premiered at Hot Docs in Toronto and won many international film festivals across the world. Elvira won the Reel Talent Award at the Copenhagen Documentary Festival for her work. In 2017, Lind directed a new feature documentary, ''Bobbi Jene.'' It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival where it won all awards in its category: Best Documentary Feature, Best Cinematography in a Documentary Feature and Best Editing in a Documentary Feature. Batsheva Dance Company
The Batsheva Dance Company (Hebrew: להקת בת שבע) is a renowned dance company based in Tel Aviv, Israel. It was founded by Martha Graham and Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild in 1964. Its inception was inspired by Israel's growing interest in American modern dance, mainly Martha Graham and Anna Sokolow. Classes in Graham technique were offered at the time, some taught by Rina Schenfeld and Rena Gluck, who were the company's principal dancers for many years. Bethsabee de Rothschild withdrew her funding in 1975, and the company gradually shed the Graham aesthetic that had dominated its early years.
