Bob Margarita
Henry Robert Margarita (November 3, 1920 – July 28, 2008) was an American football halfback and coach. He was a two-time honorable mention All-American at Brown University, once rushing for 233 yards against Columbia, the fourth-highest single-game rushing total in school history. Margarita played for the Chicago Bears from 1944 to 1946, leading the team in rushing in 1945. Following his playing career, he took the head coaching job at Georgetown University, compiling a 7–12 record in two seasons (1949–1950) and leading the Hoyas to the Sun Bowl in his first season. After a disappointing 2–7 record in his second season, the university decided to disband the football team, citing travel expenses and high rent at Griffith Stadium Griffith Stadium stood in Washington, D.C., from 1911 to 1965, between Georgia Avenue and 5th Street (left field), and between W Street and Florida Avenue NW. The 1950 Sun Bowl was a college football postseason bowl game between the Texas Western Miners and the Georgetown Hoyas. Background The Miners finished 3rd in the Border Conference in Curtice's final year with the team, as they tried to get their first Sun Bowl victory. This was Georgetown's second and final bowl game. 1950 College Football Season
The 1950 college football season finished with the unbeaten and untied Oklahoma Sooners (9–0) being the consensus choice for national champion. On New Year's Day, however, the Sooners were upset by the Kentucky Wildcats (ranked No. 7 in the AP and UP polls) in the Sugar Bowl. The Army Cadets, ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll, had been defeated in their final regular season game by 2–6 Navy, 14–2. However, the final poll had been issued on November 27, and the bowl games had no effect on Oklahoma's status as the No. 1 team. During the 20th century, the NCAA had no playoff for the college football teams that would later be described as "Division I-A". While the NCAA has never officially endorsed a championship team, it has documented the choices of some selectors in its official NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision Records publication.
