Bob Mara
Robert William "Bob" Mara (1940–2014) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played as a winger for Balmain and was the father of the late Gary Mara. Playing career Mara made his debut for Balmain in 1959 scoring 9 tries in his first season. Mara went on to play for Balmain in the 1964 and 1966 New South Wales Rugby League grand finals against St. George losing on both occasions. Balmain Tigers
The Balmain Tigers (also known as the Sydney Tigers from 1995–96) are a rugby league club based in the inner-western Sydney suburb of Balmain. They were a founding member of the New South Wales Rugby League and one of the most successful in the history of the premiership, with eleven titles. In 1999 they formed a joint venture club with the Western Suburbs Magpies club to form the Wests Tigers for competition in the National Rugby League (NRL). They no longer field any senior teams in the lower divisions. At the time of the joint venture only South Sydney Rabbitohs and the St George Dragons had won more titles than the Tigers. Penrith Panthers
The Penrith Panthers are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in the western Sydney suburb of Penrith that competes in the NRL. The team is based west of the centre of Sydney, at the foot of the Blue Mountains. Penrith are the current reigning NRL Premiers, having won the title four times. Penrith were admitted to the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition in 1967. Penrith struggled for almost twenty years before finally reaching their first finals series. The club achieved its first Grand Final appearance in 1990 but were beaten by the Canberra Raiders 18–14. Gary Mara
Gary Robert Mara (9 August 1962 – 21 August 2012) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s. The son of Bob Mara, he played for Balmain Tigers in the 1982 NSWRL season, and for Parramatta Eels in the 1984 NSWRL season. After leaving rugby league, he worked at his family's pub, the Unity Hall Hotel in Balmain. Mara died while holidaying with his family in Los Angeles, when he and his daughter were struck by a speeding drunk driver as they crossed a road. The driver, model Cara Cameron, was charged with murder and vehicular manslaughter. In a plea deal Cameron pleaded 'no contest' to "vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated". She will serve four years' jail, and pay 100,000 to the Mara family. The New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) is the governing body of rugby league in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory and is a member of the Australian Rugby League Commission. It was formed in Sydney on 8 August 1907 and was known as the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL) until 1984. From 1908 to 1994, the NSWRL ran Sydney's, then New South Wales', and eventually Australia's top-level rugby league club competition from their headquarters (or "Bunker" as it was nicknamed during the Super League war) on Phillip Street, Sydney.
