Bob Long (linebacker)
Robert Wendell Long (born February 24, 1934) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for the Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. He played college football at the University of California at Los Angeles. Early years Long attended South Pasadena High School, before moving on to the University of California at Los Angeles. In 1954, he was a part of the team that shared the national championship with Ohio State University. Professional career Los Angeles Rams Long was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round (18th overall) of the 1955 NFL Draft. Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. They are the "middle ground" of defenders, playing closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary), but farther back than the defensive linemen. John Meyers (American Football)
John Douglas Meyers (January 16, 1940 – May 7, 1998) was an American professional football player who was a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. He played college football at the University of Washington. Early years Affectionately known as "Big John", he attended Columbia High School. In 1957, he was an All-state football player and was an All-American in basketball, that led his team to the 1958 State Basketball Championship. Meyers accepted a basketball scholarship from the University of Washington and was soon recruited by Jim Owens to play football as well. He was a two-time Rose Bowl champion. Defensive Tackle
A defensive tackle (DT) is a position in American football that will typically line up on the line of scrimmage, opposite one of the offensive guards, however he may also line up opposite one of the tackles. Defensive tackles are typically the largest and strongest of the defensive players. Depending on a team's individual defensive scheme, a defensive tackle may be called upon to fill several different roles. These roles may include merely holding the point of attack by refusing to be moved, or penetrating a certain gap between offensive linemen to break up a play in the opponent's backfield. If a defensive tackle reads a pass play, his primary responsibility is to pursue the quarterback, or simply knock the pass down at the line if it is within arm's reach. The 1962 NFL season was the 43rd regular season of the National Football League (NFL). Before the season, CBS signed a contract with the league to televise all regular-season games for a $4.65 million annual fee. The season ended on December 30, when the Green Bay Packers defeated the New York Giants 16–7 in the NFL championship game at Yankee Stadium. 1961 NFL Season
The 1961 NFL season was the 42nd regular season of the National Football League (NFL). The league expanded to 14 teams with the addition of the Minnesota Vikings, after the team's owners declined to be charter members of the new American Football League. The schedule was also expanded from 12 games per team to 14 games per team where it would stay for 16 years. The Vikings were placed in the Western Conference, and the Dallas Cowboys were switched from the Western Conference to the Eastern. The addition of the Vikings returned the NFL to an even number of teams (and eliminated the bye week of 1960 until temporarily and on a permanent basis). The season ended when the Green Bay Packers shut out the New York Giants 37–0 in the 1961 NFL Championship Game. An end in American and Canadian football is a player who lines up at either end of the line of scrimmage, usually beside the tackles. Rules state that a legal offensive formation must always consist of seven players on the line of scrimmage and that the player on the end of the line constitutes an eligible receiver. Before the advent of two platoons, in which teams fielded distinct defensive and offensive units, players that lined up on the ends of the line on both offense and defense were referred to simply as "ends". James Ninowski, Jr. (born March 26, 1936), aka "Nino", is a former American football quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) for the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints. He played college football at Michigan State University and was drafted in the fourth round of the 1958 NFL Draft.
