Bob Fitzsimmons
Robert James Fitzsimmons (26 May 1863 – 22 October 1917) was a British professional boxer who was the sport's first three-division world champion. He also achieved fame for beating Gentleman Jim Corbett (the man who beat John L. Sullivan), and he is in ''The Guinness Book of World Records'' as the lightest heavyweight champion, weighing just 165 pounds when he won the title. Nicknamed Ruby Robert and The Freckled Wonder, he took pride in his lack of scars and appeared in the ring wearing heavy woollen underwear to conceal the disparity between his trunk and leg-development. Considered one of the hardest punchers in boxing history, Fitzsimmons is ranked as No. 8 on '' The Ring'' magazine's list of 100 greatest punchers of all time. Montague James Furlong (22 July 1868 – 14 March 1913), commonly known as Jim Hall, was an Australian middleweight boxer. He won the Australian middleweight title in 1887 before moving to the United States in an attempt to take the World title from Jack (Nonpareil) Dempsey. Described as "one of the best little fighters that ever lived" in ''The Milwaukee Journal'', Hall's career was affected by alcoholism, and he died of tuberculosis in 1913. John Edward Kelly (December 15, 1862 – November 1, 1895) was an Irish-American boxer, better known as Nonpareil Jack Dempsey, who was the first holder of the World Middleweight Championship (1884–1891). He was nicknamed "Nonpareil" because of his reputation of being unbeatable. Biography Dempsey was born on December 15, 1862 in Curran, County Kildare, United Kingdom (now Republic of Ireland). The Australian middleweight boxing championship is a title administrated by the Australian National Boxing Federation. The current Australian middleweight champion is Issac Hardman. Recognition In 1886 a boxing match between Jack Donohue and Alf Pickering at Foley's Gymnasium in Sydney was promoted as being for the middleweight champion of Australia, however the winner was not referred to as the middleweight champion after the fight and neither boxer was ever promoted as defending the title. Billy McCarthy was being referred to as middleweight champion of Australia as of 1886 however his matches were not promoted as though it was an official title which was on the line. Herbert Slade
Herbert Augustus Slade (10 January 1851 – 6 April 1913), also known as "Maori" Slade, the Big Maori, the Maori Mauler or the Australian Giant, was a New Zealand boxer of Irish and Māori descent, who fought John L. Sullivan for the heavyweight championship of the world in 1883. This occurred at Madison Square Garden, New York, on 6 August 1883. Sullivan won in the third round. On 3 July 1896, long after his retirement, Slade was heavily beaten in a ten-round fight with Charley Lange. On other occasions, he reportedly had the better of Sullivan in saloon scuffles.
