Bob Buckhorn
Robert Francis Buckhorn Jr. (born July 29, 1958) is an American politician who served as the mayor of Tampa, Florida from 2011 to 2019. He is a member of the Democratic Party who also served two terms on the Tampa City Council. Early life and education Born in Evanston, Illinois, the eldest of three sons, Buckhorn grew up in Falls Church, Virginia. He graduated in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in political science from Pennsylvania State University, where he was on the college lacrosse team from 1976 to 1978. He was awarded the 2019 Outstanding Alumni Award in the College of Liberal Arts, Department of Political Science. Career Previously, Buckhorn was the director of governmental affairs for the Builders Association of Greater Tampa. From 1987 to 1995, he served as special assistant to Tampa Mayor Sandra Freedman. Tampa had no mayor from 1862 until 1866, during which time the city government was temporarily suspended during and immediately after the American Civil War. Election process In 1910, the white supremacist White Municipal Party was established in Tampa. It excluded African Americans from being members effectively excluding African American voters from having influence in the city's mayoral elections from 1910 until 1947. Since 1953, Tampa's municipal elections (including those for mayor) have been non-partisan. All qualified candidates are entered into the general election without a primary election. Candidates are required to disclose a party affiliation. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, a runoff election is held between the top two vote-getters to decide the final outcome. Jane Castor (born December 7, 1960) is an American politician and former police chief serving as the 59th mayor of Tampa, Florida. She was the first woman and first openly gay person to serve as Chief of Police of the Tampa Police Department from 2009 to 2015 and the first openly gay person to be elected Mayor of Tampa. Early life and education Castor attended Chamberlain High School in Tampa and graduated in 1977. Castor attended the University of Tampa, where she played volleyball and basketball while earning a degree in criminology.
