Bob Atkinson (police Officer)
Robert "Bob" Atkinson, is a retired police officer who served as the Police commissioner, Commissioner of the Queensland Police Service from 2000 until his retirement in 2012. In 2013 Atkinson was appointed one of six Commissioner, Royal Commissioners to the Australian Government Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Career Atkinson was sworn in as Police constable, constable on 30 October 1968 and there began a 44-year career with the Queensland Police Service, where he performed a wide range of operational and managerial roles. In his career with the Queensland Police Service, he served throughout Queensland from Goondiwindi to Cairns. He was a detective for approximately 20 years and acted as the police prosecutor in various Magistrates Courts during this period. Fitzgerald Inquiry
The Commission of Inquiry into Possible Illegal Activities and Associated Police Misconduct (the Fitzgerald Inquiry; 1987–1989) into Queensland Police corruption was a judicial inquiry presided over by Tony Fitzgerald QC. The inquiry resulted in the resignation of Queensland's premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, the calling of two by-elections, the jailing of three former ministers and the Police Commissioner (who also lost his knighthood). It also contributed to the end of the National Party of Australia's 32-year run as the governing political party in Queensland. History The inquiry was established in response to a series of articles by reporter Phil Dickie in ''The Courier-Mail'' about high-level police corruption, followed by a ''Four Corners'' television report on the same issue, by Chris Masters, entitled "The Moonlight State", which aired on 11 May 1987. The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. NPSM Ribbon
The National Police Service Medal (NPSM) is a special service award within the Australian honours system to provide "recognition for the unique contribution and significant commitment of those persons who have given ethical and diligent service as a sworn member of an Australian police service". The NPSM is awarded for "15 years 'ethical and diligent service' on or after 14 February 1975, or for a lesser period if that service was terminated due to the member's death, or to an impairment related to the discharge of their duties as a Constable of Police". Australian police continue to receive the National Medal to recognise their long service.
