Boake Gates
The Boake Gates (officially ''Boake Memorial Gates'') at Royal College Colombo are three entrances to the main building along Rajakeeya Mawatha in Colombo. Erected in 1938, the gates stand as a symbol for the college's traditions and culture. The gates were built in memory of Rev. Dr. Barcroft Boake, who served as headmaster of the ''Colombo Academy'', the forerunner to the Royal College Colombo from 1842 to 1870. His son Rev W. H. Boake bequeathed £250 in his will to the Lord Bishop of Colombo to be used at Royal College in the memory of his father. This money was used to build a set of wrought iron gates which were named the Boake Memorial Gates, replacing the wooden gates that had been installed when the new Royal College building was built in 1923. Royal College Colombo
Royal College, Colombo is a selective entry boys' school located in Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Started as a private school by Rev Joseph Marsh in 1835, it was established as the Colombo Academy by Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton in January 1836, as part of the implementation of the recommendations of the Colebrooke Cameron Commission (1833), and was the first government-run secondary school for boys in the island. Royal College is the first public school in Sri Lanka and is often referred to as the "Eton of Sri Lanka". The school was founded in the British public school tradition, based on the recommendations of the Colebrooke Cameron Commission (1833), and having been named the Royal College, Colombo in 1881 with consent from Queen Victoria, it became the first school to gain the prefix, "Royal", outside of the British Isles and it was one of the first schools to be designated as a national school by the Sri Lankan Government in the 1980s. Rajakeeya Mawatha
Rajakeeya Mawatha (Sinhalese: රාජකීය මාවත) (English: ''Royal Avenue'' formerly ''Race Course Avenue'') is a street in Colombo, Sri Lanka, named after Royal College Colombo, whose grounds border it on the southern side. Located in the prominent residential area of Cinnamon Gardens in Colombo 7, it is home to many notable residents and old mansions. The street connects Reid Avenue with Thurstan Road and is the Northern border of Royal College, Colombo. It runs east-west line - at its western end is situated the Orient Club, while at the eastern end is the Obeyesekere Walawa. Two statues at each end of the street commemorate two prominent Sri Lankan politicians, both of whom were assassinated. Barcroft Boake (educator)
Dr Barcroft Boake (1814 - 9 September 1876) was an Irish born clergyman and educator, who was the longest serving principal of Royal College Colombo, from 1842 to 1870. Barcroft Boake was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1814, the only son of John Fuller Boake (1792-1865), a brick merchant, and Mary née Lodge. In 1828, at the age of 14, he entered Trinity College Dublin, and in 1836 received a Bachelor of Arts. He subsequently obtained granted a Master of Arts, Bachelor of Divinity and Doctorate of Divinity. Boake was ordained as a deacon by the Bishop of Cork, Samuel Kyle, in 1838 and as a priest in 1839. In 1841 the Church Missionary Society proposed to establish a new school in southern India and offered Boake the position of headmaster. The scheme however broke down and the Society recommended to the Secretary of State that he be offered the position of principal of the Colombo Academy, a state school operated by the government. Tom Neville Wynne-Jones
Tom Neville Wynne-Jones (19 November 1893 - 21 June 1979) was a Welsh architect, who served as the Chief Architect of Ceylon. Tom Neville Wynne-Jones was born on 19 November 1893 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales, the youngest son of Augustus Theophrastus Morgan (1857-1936). He studied in Cardiff and served as a second lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in the first world war, between 1915 and 1919. In 1919 he joined the Ceylon Civil Service, taking up a role as an architectural assistant in the Public Works Department. In 1932 he was formally appointed as Chief Architect. During his career he was responsible for over 2,000 projects, including significant public buildings such as the Survey Department on Kirula Road, Radio Ceylon studios, Panagoda Cantonment (Ceylon Light Infantry headquarters), the Independence Memorial Hall and the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour.
