Burlington, Iowa
Burlington is a city in, and the county seat of, Des Moines County, Iowa, United States. The population was 23,982 in the 2020 census, a decline from the 26,839 population in 2000. Burlington is the center of a micropolitan area, which includes West Burlington and Middletown, Iowa, and Gulfport, Illinois. Burlington is the home of Snake Alley, the most crooked street. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson organized two parties of explorers to map the Louisiana Purchase. The Lewis and Clark Expedition followed the Missouri River, while Lt. Zebulon Pike followed the Mississippi River. In 1805, Pike landed at the bluffs below Burlington and raised the United States Flag for the first time on what would become Iowa soil and recommended construction of a fort. The recommendation went unheeded. The Am ...

Freak Flag
''Freak Flag'' is an album by American folk singer/guitarist Greg Brown, released in 2011. The album peaked at number 34 on ''Billboard's'' Top Heatseekers chart. The original Minneapolis sessions for ''Freak Flag'' were ended by a disastrous lightning strike to the recording studio that destroyed all the tracks recorded. Brown went to Memphis and replaced all the songs save the title track in re-recording the album. Reception Music critic Mark Deming wrote in his Allmusic "... these songs find him very much in his element, marrying sly but heartfelt vocals to slinky melodies that split the difference between folky simplicity and bluesy grit... here his vocals aren't as strong a vehicle for his songs as they once were. It doesn't seem as if Brown is the least bit worried about this, but Freak Flag is one album where his take-it-or-leave-it attitude starts to fail him, at least as far as his voice is concerned." Stuart Henderson on ''Popmatters'' called the album "a disappointing ...

The Evening Call
''The Evening Call'' is an album by American folk singer/guitarist Greg Brown, released in 2006. It was his first album of all new material in over four years. Reception A review of the album in ''Sing Out!'' includes a lengthy description of the album's sound: "Brown and Ramsey do themselves proud with the laid back production, mostly guitars, bass, soft drums and percussion and the occasional harmonica that never obscure the lyrics and keep the action moving forward. You'll hear every detail of Brown's voice growling its way through the complex and sometimes brilliant lyrics. However, Brown makes Leonard Cohen sound like Mr. Sunshine. This CD requires several listenings to divine all Brown has to say and absorb the depth of his writing, but it's not one you'll want to put on the repeat mode on your CD player." ''Acoustic Guitar'' states that the album "is among Brown's finest work," and suggests the work was "clearly influenced by the sudden death last year of Brown's close f ...

Honey In The Lion's Head
''Honey in the Lion's Head'' is an album by folk singer/guitarist Greg Brown. It is his second release on the Trailer Records label. Of the 12 tracks, ten are traditional songs. One is Jim Garland’s Depression-era classic, “I Don’t Want Your Millions Mister”, and the other is a Brown original. Brown's wife, Iris DeMent and daughters Constie and Pieta Brown join on background vocals. Reception Writing for Allmusic, music critic Ronnie D. Lankford Jr. wrote "Despite Brown's lethargic pacing, fans of traditional music will be glad someone dusted off these venerable songs and put a bit of life in them." Jim Musser of '' No Depression'' wrote of Brown's song choices "the flexible lyrics and deathless tunes of his youth have always remained true, and he more than repays the debt he owes them." Writing for ''PopMatters'', Seth Limmer was equivocal about the release, calling the album "a good listen, although nowhere near as compelling as any of Brown’s original work. The ...

At the Grammy Awards of 1998, ''Slant 6 Mind'' was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. Reception Writing for Allmusic, music critic Jeff Burger wrote of the album "For the most part, this 14th album is business as usual for Greg Brown, which is very good news indeed... Suffice it to say that once you've heard Brown's voice, you won't forget it. And while Brown once claimed he could sing Hank Williams songs with even more passion than he delivers his own, this terrific album makes a more passionate performance hard to imagine." Reception Writing for Allmusic AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide and AMG) is an American online music database. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Initiated in 1991, the databa ..., music critic Richard Meyer wrote of the album "Greg Brown's latest release is somber and streetwise with more political undertones than his previous CDs... Production is simple and in a few cases one would have liked to hear a bit more thought given to the instrumental arrangement, but still this is a fine stripped-to-the-bone songwriter album by one of the premiere contemporary writers." Music critic Robert Christgau gave the album a "Neither" rating. Dream Café
''Dream Café'' is an album by American folk singer/guitarist Greg Brown, released in 1992. It was produced by Bo Ramsey. It is a Red House release. Reception Music critic David Freedlander praised the release in his Allmusic review, writing Brown "Brown produces an album as light and refreshing as a summer breeze. Although it is plagued by the inconsistency which characterizes most of his studio work, some of his most heartfelt and enduring songs can be found on this album..." Down In There
''Down in There'' is an album by American folk singer/guitarist Greg Brown, released in 1990. Reception Writing for Allmusic, music critic Jason Ankeny wrote of the album "... Brown proves himself an able songwriter as well as a singer... While the majority of the album's songs are ballads leaning toward spare folk and country, "Poor Backslider" fits snugly into a Southern rock groove, while "If I Had Known" lopes along like an old rockabilly shuffle; all serve Brown's broken-in baritone wonderfully." Red House Records
Red House Records is an independent folk and Americana record label in St. Paul, Minnesota. The label was founded in 1983 by Bob Feldman after seeing a performance by Iowa folk singer Greg Brown. Origin The label is named for a farmhouse in Iowa where Brown was living when he started it. After Brown's albums ''44 & 66'' and ''The Iowa Waltz'' were released in 1981 and 1982, it briefly went dormant until he met Bob Feldman in 1983. Feldman took over operation of the record label, while Brown focused on his musical endeavors, as he had just signed on to regularly perform on the radio program ''A Prairie Home Companion''. Feldman was known for his business philosophy of wanting "to provide a home and environment in which creative artists can make albums in total freedom—without interference from mogul types just looking for the next hit single." The first album released on the newly restarted label was Brown's ''In the Dark with You''. Over the next few years, the label focus ...
