Bo-Bo-Bo Locomotives
A Bo-Bo-Bo or Bo′Bo′Bo′ (UIC classification) is a locomotive with three independent two-axle bogies with all axles powered by separate traction motors. In the AAR wheel arrangement, AAR system, this is simplified to AAR wheel arrangement#B-B-B, B-B-B. The Bo-Bo-Bo configuration is often used to lower axle weight while keeping lateral forces low compared to a locomotive with two three-axle bogies, thus allowing the locomotive to use lightly laid track, in particular Narrow gauge railway, narrow-gauge railways. Bo-Bo-Bo locomotives The arrangement is extensively used on Italy, Italian and Japanese railways. Other examples include New Zealand's New Zealand DJ class locomotive, DJ, NZR EW class, EW and New Zealand EF class locomotive, EF classes; the Eurotunnel Class 9 locomotives, which were themselves derived from the New Zealand EF class; the Swiss Swiss Federal Railways, SBB Re 6/6 (Re 620); the Russia Railways VL65, EP1 (electric locomotive), EP1 (EP1M), EP10 and EP20 ...

Re 6/6
The Re 620, Re 6/6 in the old numbering scheme, are six-axle, electric locomotives of the SBB-CFF-FFS, which were acquired as a replacement for the Ae 6/6 for heavy services on the Gotthardbahn. They are the most modern of the so-called "Gotthard locomotives". Construction and Technology To reach the necessary tractive effort, a construction comprising six driven axles was necessary. In order to still get good running characteristics in curves, they were built into three two-axle bogies instead of two three-axle bogies as on the Ae 6/6. The middle bogie can move sideways, and the three bogies are connected by elastic cross couplings. Two of the four prototypes were built with a split locomotive body, whereby the joint may only move on an horizontal transverse axis to allow for changes in gradient, similarly to the Rhaetian Railway Ge 6/6 II. The other two prototypes got a softer secondary suspension instead of the joint, which proved to be so reliable in everyday use that all ...

New South Wales 86 Class Locomotive
The 86 class is a class of electric locomotives built by Comeng, Granville for the State Rail Authority of New South Wales. History The 86 class initially hauled passenger and freight services to Lithgow on the Main Western line and Wyong on the Main Northern line. Their sphere of operation extended to Newcastle on the latter line in June 1984 and to Port Kembla in January 1986 when the Illawarra line was electrified. With a one-hour rating of 4,400 horsepower (hp), the 86 class was the most powerful locomotive in Australia at the time. Although no longer in regular use, the class remains among the most powerful in the country. Despite their higher power rating, they were generally regarded as inferior to the Metropolitan-Vickers built 46 class, which dated from the late 1950s. The last, 8650 was delivered as a Bo-Bo-Bo trial unit. It spent long periods out of traffic undergoing repair. In 1994/95 all were repainted by A Goninan & Co, Taree into FreightCorp blue. By O ...

State Rail Authority
The State Rail Authority, a former statutory authority of the Government of New South Wales, operated and maintained railways in the Australian state of New South Wales from July 1980 until December 2003. History The ''Transport Authorities Act 1980'' separated the functions of the Public Transport Commission (formerly responsible for all public transport) and established the State Rail Authority. The State Rail Authority assumed responsibility for trains, while the Urban Transit Authority responsibility for buses and ferries. In July 1982 a new colour scheme developed by Phil Belbin of red, yellow, orange and white was unveiled, which was commonly referred to as the "candy colours". The ''L7'' logo used by the Public Transport Commission was retained, albeit with the dark and light blue replaced with red and orange. Around this time, they also gave playing cards and soap to passengers. Electrification During its tenure the State Rail Authority completed a number of electr ...

China Railways Class SS7
The Shaoshan 7 (Chinese: 韶山7) is a type of electric locomotive used on the People's Republic of China's national railway system. They are widely used on electrified lines in the southwest part of China. Design The design of SS7 was influenced by the 6K, an electric locomotive model imported from Japan.SS7型电力机车
_trainnets.com
The first SS7 was built in 1992 in Datong. In 1997, SS7s were used in Nanning-Kunming Railway. However, SS7's frequent failure lead to Datong Electric Locomotive Works making improvements to SS7s. Failure was reduced to just four cases in one year in 2004. SS7 Electric Locomotive was still produced as of 2007. Most of SS ...

Electric Locomotive
An electric locomotive is a locomotive powered by electricity from overhead lines, a third rail or on-board energy storage such as a battery or a supercapacitor. Locomotives with on-board fuelled prime movers, such as diesel engines or gas turbines, are classed as diesel-electric or gas turbine-electric and not as electric locomotives, because the electric generator/motor combination serves only as a power transmission system. Electric locomotives benefit from the high efficiency of electric motors, often above 90% (not including the inefficiency of generating the electricity). Additional efficiency can be gained from regenerative braking, which allows kinetic energy to be recovered during braking to put power back on the line. Newer electric locomotives use AC motor-inverter drive systems that provide for regenerative braking. Electric locomotives are quiet compared to diesel locomotives since there is no engine and exhaust noise and less mechanical noise. The lack of re ...

China Railways Class 6K
The 6K is a Japanese-built electric locomotive used in China. It is developed and built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Electric. The design of 6K is based on JNR Class ED75 and EF66 electric locomotives. It is the first locomotive with Bo-Bo-Bo wheel arrangement used in China. Production In total 85 6Ks were built between 1986 and 1987. Equipment Each 6K locomotive uses CLG-616 phase splitter A phase splitter is a device that separates a signal into multiple phases (or polarities). The term is most often applied to amplifiers that produce two "balanced" voltage outputs: of equal amplitude but opposite polarity (i.e. 180 degrees phase ... and 6 Mitsubishi Electric MB-530-AVR DC traction motors. Performance 6K was one of the most reliable electric locomotives in China compared with SS1, SS2 and SS3 at the time of entering service. China later made SS7 locomotive with reference to the Tri-Bo wheel arrangement of 6K, the breakdown rate, however, was still high, ...

Korail Class 8000
The Korail Class 8000 locomotive is a series of South Korean electric locomotives operated by Korail. This locomotive was introduced from 1972 to 1990, after electrification of several industrial lines. It was assigned both passenger and freight duty until the introduction of the 8200 series, which restricted the older locomotives to solely freight service. 94 were built (numbered 8001-8094), but many have been retired as new replacements enter service. Technical details The locomotive was designed by the 50 C/s Group, which consisted of European manufacturers Alsthom (now Alstom), Siemens, MTE, Brown-Boveri, ACEC, and AEG, and was led by Alsthom. The locomotive has three bogies in Bo-Bo-Bo arrangement. With six DC motors, the total power is . The gear ratio is 15:96, and top speed , optimized for mountain lines with steep grades and short radius curves. The design was inspired by contemporary French locomotives, such as SNCF Class BB 15000 and SNCF Class CC 6500. ...
