The Blues Women's team (known as the Nib Health Funds, nib Blues Women for sponsorship reasons) is a New Zealand professional women's rugby union team based in Auckland, New Zealand that competes in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. History Historic clash On 1 May 2021, the Blues and Chiefs Manawa, Chiefs women's teams created history when they played in the first-ever women's Super Rugby match in New Zealand. The Blues hosted the Chiefs women at Eden Park in a double header before the Super Rugby Aotearoa round 10 match between their men's teams. It was to be a one-off match in 2021, but both franchises expressed their commitment to developing a Super Rugby team for women in the future. The teams played for the 'Waipuea Women's Rugby Taonga' trophy. Super Rugby Aupiki
Super Rugby Aupiki is a professional women's rugby union club competition in New Zealand. Its inaugural season was held in March 2022. It is a steppingstone between the Farah Palmer Cup and the Black Ferns. Aupiki translates as ‘''the ascent to the upper most realm''’. Format Initially the four teams were supposed to have three regular season matches with one home and away game, and one Super Round fixture. The top two teams at the end of the three rounds would contest the final. However, the competition was reformatted as a round robin fixture because of the impact of COVID-19. All the squads were strongly affected with player isolations and COVID-19 cases. The inaugural champion would be crowned based on their competition points after the final round. Tafito Lafaele (born 17 February 2001) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She made her Black Ferns test debut in 2022. She plays for the Blues Women in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition and represents Auckland provincially. Background Lafaele attended Botany Downs Secondary College where she participated in athletics, volleyball, basketball, netball and sevens. Rugby career 2019–21 Lafaele debuted for the Auckland Storm in the 2019 Farah Palmer Cup. In 2021 she played for the Moana Pasifika Sevens team against the Black Ferns and Black Ferns Sevens. Grace Gago
Grace Gago (born 5 May 1998) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for the Blues in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition and for Counties Manukau in the Farah Palmer Cup. Early career Gago was attending Manurewa High School when she was named Counties Manukau Rugby's under-18 girls' Player of the Year at the Junior Rugby Awards that was held in Pukekohe in 2016. Besides playing for the Counties Manukau under-18s team, she also played for the Manurewa Wahine rugby league team and the Samoan under-18 tag team. She also represented her school in touch and was also part of their football and first XVs team. Chryss Viliko
Chryss Viliko (born 25 December 2000) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for the Blues Women in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Biography Viliko attended Onehunga High School in Auckland. She made her debut for Auckland in the Farah Palmer Cup in 2018. She also plays for Marist in the Auckland club competition. She missed most of the 2021 Farah Palmer Cup season due to her recovery from an ACL knee reconstruction. 2021–22 Viliko attended a Black Ferns High Performance camp in October 2021. Toka Natua
Toka Natua (born 22 November 1991) is a New Zealand rugby footballer. She has represented New Zealand in rugby union and the Cook Islands in rugby league. She plays for the Blues Women in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Rugby career 2015 Natua made her debut for the New Zealand women's national rugby union team, the Black Ferns, in 2015 against Canada. 2017 Natua scored a hat-trick and was also cited for foul play, in New Zealand's victory over England in the final of the 2017 Women's Rugby World Cup. Sophie Fisher
Sophie Fisher (born 25 November 1998) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for the Blues Women in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition and represents Auckland provincially. Rugby career Fisher played hockey before switching to rugby in Year 13 at Kaipara College. Between 2017 and 2020, she played 22 games for North Harbour as a Lock. She then moved to Auckland in 2021 where she switched to Loosehead Prop, she is also a goal-kicker for the side. Fisher was a late call-up to the Blues Women's Super Rugby Aupiki squad in 2022. Esther Faiaoga-Tilo
Esther Faiaoga-Tilo (born 26 September 1994) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for the Blues Women in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Rugby career Faiaoga-Tilo played for Hurricanes Poua in the inaugural season of Super Rugby Aupiki in 2022. She then moved up north after she was released by Hurricanes Poua to try-out for the Blues. 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki Season
The 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki season was the second season of Super Rugby Aupiki (known as Sky Super Rugby Aupiki for sponsorship reasons), a professional women's rugby union club competition organised by New Zealand Rugby. The competition ran from 25 February 2023when Hurricanes Poua and Chiefs Manawa played the opening match in Levinto 25 March 2023. The tournament was won by Matatū, who defeated Chiefs Manawa 33–31 in the final in Hamilton, earning them their first Super Rugby Aupiki title. That match also resulted in the Chiefs Manawa's first-ever loss in the two-year-old competition. Competition format The competition featured four teams, who each played three regular season matches and two play-off matches. A total of ten matches were played over five weeks.
