Blue Ridge, Alberta
Blue Ridge is a hamlet in northwest Alberta, Canada within Woodlands County. It is located on Highway 658, north of Highway 43 and south of the Athabasca River. It is midway between the towns of Whitecourt and Mayerthorpe and approximately northwest of Edmonton. Economy A lumber mill to the north of Blue Ridge, operated by Blue Ridge Lumber Inc., is the main employer for the community. The hamlet also offers services to the oil and gas industry and the surrounding agricultural community. Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Parkway and All-American Road in the United States, noted for its scenic beauty. The parkway, which is America's longest linear park, runs for through 29 Virginia and North Carolina counties, linking Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It runs mostly along the spine of the Blue Ridge, a major mountain chain that is part of the Appalachian Mountains. Its southern terminus is at U.S. Route 441 (US 441) on the boundary between Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina, from which it travels north to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. The first USS ''Blue Ridge'' (ID-2432) was a steamship in the United States Navy. The ship was named for the Blue Ridge Mountains. Service history In commercial service, 1891–1918 ''Blue Ridge'' was originally constructed as the Great Lakes passenger steamer ''Virginia'' built by Globe Iron Works at Cleveland, Ohio. The ship was launched in 1891 and was operated by the Goodrich Transit Company between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1893, during the Chicago World's Fair, the ship and the whaleback steamer competed against each other in races. In US Navy service, 1918–1919 ''Virginia'' was purchased on 19 April 1918 for use as a Navy transport at Manitowoc, Wisconsin once America entered World War I. The ''Blue Ridge'' was a daily Amtrak passenger train that operated between Washington, D.C. and Cumberland, Maryland (Martinsburg, West Virginia after 1976). Blue Ridge is a brand and range of American tableware ( dishware) manufactured by Southern Potteries Incorporated from the 1930s until 1957.
