Blue Peter
''Blue Peter'' is a British children's television entertainment programme created by John Hunter Blair. It is the longest-running children's TV show in the world, having been broadcast since October 1958. It was broadcast primarily from BBC Television Centre in London until September 2011, when the programme moved to dock10 studios at MediaCityUK in Salford, Greater Manchester. It is currently shown live on the CBBC television channel on Fridays at 5pm. The show is also repeated on Saturdays at 11:30am, Sundays at 9:00am and a BSL version is shown on Tuesdays at 2:00pm. Following its original creation, the programme was developed by a BBC team led by Biddy Baxter; she became the programme editor in 1965, relinquishing the role in 1988. Peter Harris (born 1961), popularly known as Blu Peter, is a British electronic dance music producer and disc jockey from South Wales, who pioneered the nu-NRG music genre in the late 1990s. In the early 1990s, he served as resident DJ at major London nightclubs Heaven and Turnmills. He has performed at raves and nightclubs around the world. After establishing his DJ career, Harris began producing original music as Blu Peter. "Blue Peter" is a single by musician Mike Oldfield, released in 1979 on the Virgin label. It is a rendition of the theme tune for the British children's television show ''Blue Peter'' and was used by the show between 1979 and 1989. It is a new version of the original theme tune "Barnacle Bill", written by Herbert Ashworth-Hope. ''Blue Peter'' The royalties from the single went to the Cambodia appeal launched by the children's show. It charted at number 19 in the UK Singles Chart. Blue Peter was a Canadian new wave synthpop band founded in 1978 in Markham, Ontario, by Chris Wardman and Paul Humphrey. In their heyday, Blue Peter opened for major international acts such as the Police and Simple Minds. The video for "Don't Walk Past", directed by Rob Quartly, was No. 85 on MuchMusic's top videos of the century list, and was played on MTV in the United States, in spite of the lack of American record distribution for the band. Humphrey died on April 4, 2021, after a long illness. History Blue Peter was founded by guitarist/songwriter Chris Wardman and lead singer Paul Humphrey in the late 1970s, as a high school band. Blue Peter (1936–1957) was a British bred Thoroughbred racehorse whose career was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. He won The Derby and was later a Leading broodmare sire in Great Britain & Ireland. Bred and owned by Lord Rosebery, his sire was the good racehorse, Fairway and his dam Fancy Free was by Stefan the Great, a son of The Tetrarch. Blue Peter was buried in the Mentmore estate. Racing record At age two, Blue Peter raced twice without winning. He was unplaced in one outing and second in the Middle Park Stakes behind the top-rated British two-year-old, Foxbrough. Blue Peter (1946–1950) was an American Thoroughbred Champion racehorse. Background Bred and raced by Joseph M. Roebling, great-grandson of John A. Roebling, who built the Brooklyn Bridge, Blue Peter was out of the mare Carillon, a granddaughter of Teddy. The Blue Peter Book Awards were a set of literary awards for children's books conferred by the BBC television programme '' Blue Peter''. They were inaugurated in 2000 for books published in 1999. The Awards have been managed by reading charity, Booktrust, since 2006. As of 2013, there are two award categories: Best Story and Best Book with Facts. The awards were discontinued in 2022, one month after the end of the Costa Book Awards, which included a category for children's book, leaving only two widely recognized awards for children's literature (the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Waterstones Children's Book Prize). John Robert Charles Spurling (1870 – 1933) was an English painter noted for nautical themes, particularly sailing ships of the 19th and 20th centuries. History Spurling was born on 12 December 1870. He was the son of an importer and grew up near the London docks, where he learned to sketch as a pastime. At the age of 16 he first went to sea as an apprentice aboard ''Astoria''. His life nearly ended when he fell from the main upper topsail yard to the deck, he instead spent six months in a Singapore hospital. He gained his second mate's certificate after some years aboard one of Devitt & Moore's sail training vessels, and around the same time learned the art of watercolor painting, and was soon receiving commissions from other seafarers. He finished his life at sea as a sailor with the Blue Anchor line of steamers.
