''Blue Cat Blues'' is a 1956 one-reel animated ''Tom and Jerry'' cartoon and was written, directed and produced by co-creators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. The short was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on November 16, 1956 in CinemaScope. It is the series' 103rd entry. Unusual for a ''Tom and Jerry'' cartoon, Jerry "speaks," through an inner monologue, voiced by Paul Frees. Plot Tom is seen sitting on train tracks, heavily depressed and waiting for an oncoming train to come and run him over, while Jerry laments at his friend's state and recalls how he ended up there. MGM Animation/Visual Arts was an American animation studio established in 1962 by animation director/producer Chuck Jones, producer Les Goldman and animator Ken Harris as Sib Tower 12 Productions. Chuck Jones
Charles Martin Jones (September 21, 1912 – February 22, 2002) was an American animator, director, and painter, best known for his work with Warner Bros. Cartoons on the ''Looney Tunes'' and ''Merrie Melodies'' series of shorts. He wrote, produced, and/or directed many classic animated cartoon, Animated Cartoon shorts starring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, Pepé Le Pew, and Porky Pig, among others. Jones started his career in 1933 alongside Tex Avery, Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett, and Robert McKimson at the Leon Schlesinger Production's Termite Terrace studio, where they created and developed the Looney Tunes characters. During the World War II, Second World War, Jones directed many of the ''Private Snafu'' (1943–1946) shorts which were shown to members of the United States military. ''Purr-Chance to Dream'' is a 1967 short and the final ''Tom and Jerry'' short produced under MGM Animation/Visual Arts, and was directed by Ben Washam and produced by Chuck Jones. This is the final short of the original ''Tom and Jerry'' series until 2001's '' The Mansion Cat'', and the final theatrical ''Tom and Jerry'' short of the entire franchise until 2005's '' The Karate Guard''. Plot Tom wakes up after a nightmare of being turned into a nail-shape and pounded into the ground by a giant bulldog. When he sees Jerry catching a bone, he flicks the bone with his finger and then Jerry wallops him on the head with it and runs off, stopping at a giant dog house. The short was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on August 1, 1958. It is the 114th and last ''Tom and Jerry'' theatrical cartoon produced or directed by both Hanna and Barbera, and the last cartoon short of the series until Gene Deitch's '' Switchin' Kitten'' in 1961.
