Blondie's Big Deal
''Blondie's Big Deal'' is a 1949 American comedy film directed by Edward Bernds and starring Penny Singleton, Arthur Lake, Larry Simms, Marjorie Ann Mutchie. It is the twenty-fifth of the 28 Blondie films. Plot Dagwood accidentally invents a non flammable paint. Con men visit Blondie and, while her back is turned, switch cans of it for ordinary paint, hoping to have the special paint formula analyzed. Dagwood unwittingly paints his boss Mr. Radcliffe's barn with the wrong paint as a test, and with Mr. Radcliffe watching, sets the barn on fire, only to have it burn down, disgracing Dagwood. Blondie then, using an assumed name, is hired as a secretary in the con men's office, where she records their incriminating conversation. As she is about to leave and take back Dagwood's valuable paint, they seize the paint and tie her to a chair as prisoner, but she is soon rescued by a visitor. Edward Bernds
Edward Bernds (July 12, 1905May 20, 2000) was an American screenwriter and director, born in Chicago, Illinois. Career While in his junior year in Lake View High School, he and several friends formed a small radio clique and obtained amateur licenses. In the early 1920s, there was considerable prestige for amateur operators to have commercial radio licenses, and Bernds was in a good position to enter broadcasting when he graduated in 1923, a year when radio stations began to be established all over Chicago. He found employment — at age 20 — as chief operator at Chicago's WENR. When talking pictures began in the late 1920s, Bernds and broadcast operators like him relocated to Hollywood to work as sound technicians in "the talkies". After a brief period at United Artists, Bernds resigned and worked at Columbia Pictures, where he functioned as sound engineer on many of Frank Capra's classics in the 1930s. George Harrington Lloyd (November 5, 1892 – August 15, 1967) was an American vaudevillian and character actor. Born in Edinburg, Illinois, Lloyd appeared in over 270 films between 1932 and 1956. Chester Lamont Clute (February 18, 1891 – April 2, 1956) was an American actor familiar in scores of Hollywood films from his debut in 1930. Diminutive, bald-pated with a bristling moustache, he appeared in mostly unbilled roles, consisting usually of one or two lines, in nearly 250 films. Jack Rice (May 14, 1893 – December 14, 1968) was an American actor best known for appearing as the scrounging, freeloading brother-in-law in Edgar Kennedy's series of short domestic comedy films at the RKO studio, and also as "Ollie" (aka "Oliver Merton" and "Oliver Shaw") in around a dozen of Columbia Pictures's series of the ''Blondie'' comic strip.
