Margaret Agnew Blennerhassett
Margaret Agnew Blennerhassett (1771 – June 16, 1842) was an English-American poet and aristocrat. Life Margaret Agnew was born in 1771, in Bishop Auckland, England. Her father, Robert Agnew, was the lieutenant governor of the Isle of Man. Margaret defied social and religious conventions by marrying her maternal uncle, Harman Blennerhassett, a wealthy Irish aristocrat. They shared a 7,000-acre estate in County Kerry until 1795, when their union and Harman's revolutionary ideals prompted them to sell the estate and immigrate to America. Margaret is said to have been above average height with brown hair and blue eyes. She often wore her hair bound in a silk headdress. She wrote and spoke French and Italian fluently. She would often accompany her husband on hunting trips and enjoyed horseback riding. The couple left London and sailed to New York City in America. ''Blennerhassett'' is a brief radio opera in one act by American composer Vittorio Giannini with a libretto by Phillip Roll and Norman Corwin. It was commissioned by CBS Radio as part of the Columbia Composers Commission, following the success of Giannini's earlier radio opera ''Beauty and the Beast''. It received its premiere in a radio broadcast on 2 November 1939. ''Blennerhassett'' was subsequently performed in several staged and concert productions, including a 1991 semi-staged concert performance in New York City by American Chamber Opera. A performance of the opera generally lasts less than thirty minutes, although the 1991 production added a 10-minute prelude set in a radio studio which reenacted the pre-broadcast preparation for the original premiere. Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park
Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park is a state park located on Blennerhassett Island, a small island in the Ohio River, located in Wood County, West Virginia, USA. The property was the site of a Palladian mansion owned by Harman Blennerhassett, a participant in some of the alleged intrigues of Aaron Burr, and his wife Margaret Agnew.Gibbens, Alvaro F., ''Historic Blennerhassett Island Home'', Global Printing and Binding Co., Parkersburg, WV 1914. While the original mansion burned to the ground in 1811, a detailed replica, which can be toured, was built on its foundations in the 1980s. The Blennerhasset mansion greatly resembled George Washington's Mount Vernon, due to its Palladian style. Blennerhassett Island
Blennerhassett Island is an island on the Ohio River below the mouth of the Little Kanawha River, near Parkersburg in Wood County, West Virginia, United States. Historically, Blennerhassett Island was occupied by Native Americans. Nemacolin, chief of the Delaware Nation, made it his last home, dying in 1767. European Americans knew it as Backus Island, named for Elijah Backus, who purchased it in 1792 in the wave of westward settlement following the American Revolutionary War. Thomas Blennerhassett (fl. 1584-1611) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1584 and 1611. Blennerhassett may have been the son of Richard Blennerhassett, a member of the Carlisle Council in 1569. In 1584, Blennerhassett was elected Member of Parliament for Carlisle. He was re-elected MP for Carlisle in 1586. In 1597 he was Mayor of Carlisle. He was elected MP for Carlisle again in 1604. The Venerable Archdeacon Richard Noel Rowland Blennerhassett (19 December 1909 27 December 2008) was Archdeacon of Tuam from 1956 until 1969. Blennerhassett was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and ordained in 1933. His early clerical appointments were as curate in Cobh from 1933–37, which included British Army and Navy Chaplaincy, and as Rector of Comeragh and Kilmacthomas from 1937-45. He held Incumbencies at Stradbally, Knappagh, Aughavale, Omey, Athenry and Westport. Rowland Ponsonby Blennerhassett KC, JP (22 July 1850 – 7 April 1913) was an Irish politician. Early life He was the only son of Richard Francis Blennerhassett and his wife Honoria Ponsonby, daughter of William Carrique Ponsonby. Blennerhassett was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and at Christ Church, Oxford. Career In a by-election in 1872, he entered the British House of Commons and sat as Member of Parliament (MP) for Kerry until 1885. Blennerhassett was called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1878, and in April 1894 became bencher and a King's Counsel. He was a Justice of the Peace for Kerry. Personal life On 21 September 1876, he married Mary Beatrice Armstrong, youngest daughter of the art historian Walter Armstrong. They had one son. Sir Rowland Blennerhassett, 4th Baronet (5 September 1839 – 22 March 1909) was a Roman Catholic Anglo-Irish baronet and Liberal Party politician from County Kerry. Life Blennerhassett was the son of Sir Arthur Blennerhassett, 3rd Baronet, whose ancestors had settled in Kerry under Queen Elizabeth, and his wife Sarah Mahony. He was educated at Downside School, Stonyhurst College and Christ Church, Oxford. He then spent time at the Université catholique de Louvain, before travelling in Germany. In 1849, he succeeded his father as baronet. When he returned to the United Kingdom, he started ''The Chronicle'', a political and literary organ of liberal Catholicism. The first issue appeared on 23 March 1867, but its outspoken support for the Irish Home Rule movement made it unpopular. The last issue was published on 13 February 1868. Colonel Sir Rowland Blennerhassett, 1st Baronet (1741 - 14 March 1821) was an Anglo-Irish lawyer and baronet. Life Blennerhassett was the son of Robert Blennerhassett and Frances Yielding. He was the great-grandson of Robert Blennerhassett MP.John Debrett, ''Debrett's Baronetage of England: with alphabetical lists of such baronetcies as have merged in the peerage, or have become extinct, and also of the existing baronets of Nova Scotia and Ireland'' (J.G. & F. Rivington, 1835), 347. He trained as an attorney and practised law. He was the colonel of the 'Laune Rangers' militia regiment of volunteers from 1779 to 1782. Between 1796 and 1797 he was a Justice of the Peace in County Kerry.
