Blendr
Blendr was an online dating application based on geosocial networking for Android, iOS and Facebook. It is designed to connect like-minded people near to each other. It was created by Joel Simkhai and patterned after his previous app Grindr which is instead aimed at gay men. Blendr claims to be "powered by" Badoo but largely appears to be the same service. As of 2022, it had 200 million users worldwide and requires users to be over the age of 18. As of 31st October 2022 Blendr ceased activity in all territories worldwide. A statement on the Blendr website stated that all user data would be deleted by 30th November 2022 and the website would go offline from the 7th December 2022. Joel Simkhai ( he, יואל שמחאי; born c. 1976) is an Israeli-American tech entrepreneur. He is the founder and former CEO of geosocial networking and dating apps Grindr and Blendr. His original goal in starting Grindr was for people with similar interests to find new friends nearby. In 2022, he launched a new dating app called Motto. Life and career Simkhai was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. His mother was a jeweler, and his father was a diamond dealer. When he was three years old, his family moved to New York City. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations & Economics from Tufts University in May 1998. After starting college, he came out to his parents and friends. He has two brothers, who are also gay. After college, he worked in mergers and acquisitions. Grindr () is a location-based social networking and online dating application targeted towards members of the gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. It was one of the first geosocial apps for gay men when it launched in March 2009 and has since become the largest and most popular gay mobile app in the world. It is available on iOS and Android devices in both free and premium versions (the latter called Grindr XTRA and Grindr Unlimited). As of December 2021, Grindr has approximately 11 million monthly active users.
