Blanchetown
Blanchetown is a small township in South Australia, on the (west) bank of the Murray River, northeast of Adelaide. The Blanchetown Bridge is the westernmost (and farthest downstream) of the four crossings of the Sturt Highway over the Murray River. During the nineteenth century it was an important transportation centre on the lower Murray. In the early 21st century, Blanchetown has been described as "a strange mixture of historic buildings and temporary shacks built by holidaymakers on the banks of the river". Blanchetown is widely regarded as the entrance to the Riverland district. History Blanchetown is in the traditional lands of the Ngarrindjeri people. Blanchetown was originally surveyed in October 1855 as Blanche Town. It was named after Lady Blanche MacDonnell, the wife of the Governor of South Australia, Sir Richard MacDonnell. Sturt Highway
Sturt Highway is an Australian national highway in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. It is an important road link for the transport of passengers and freight between Sydney and Adelaide and the regions situated adjacent to the route. Initially an amalgam of trunk routes, the Sturt Highway was proclaimed a state highway in 1933. In 1955, the Australian Government gazetted the highway as a National Route, and upgraded it as a National Highway in 1992, forming the Sydney-Adelaide Link. Sturt Highway is allocated route A20 for its entire length, the majority of which is a single carriageway, and freeway standard and 6-lane arterial road standard towards its western terminus in Gawler. McBean Pound, South Australia
__NOTOC__ McBean Pound is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Riverland in the state’s east on the western side of the Murray River about north-east of the state capital of Adelaide about north-east of the municipal seat of Mannum. The locality consists of a river flat known as ''McBean Pound'' which included a lagoon called ''McBean Pond'', high ground to the west which is bounded by Boy Scout Road and the portion of the river east of the middle of its channel. The Roonka Conservation Park adjoins the locality’s south boundary. Its boundaries were created on 27 March 2003 for the “long established name” of McBean Pound. In 1927, Rodney Cockburn, the journalist, described it as "bounded by the stream on one side and on the other by a high cliff, a perfectly natural pound is formed. Murbko, South Australia
Murbko is a locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. It is located on the left bank of the Murray River downstream of the northwest bend where the river turns to flow roughly south. The river forms the western boundary of Murbko, and the southern boundary is approximately the Sturt Highway as it crosses the mallee away from the river from the Blanchetown bridge towards Waikerie. Murbko Lutheran church was built in 1907 and is still in use. The southern two-thirds of Murbko are in the District Council of Loxton Waikerie and the electoral district of Chaffey while the northern third is in the Mid Murray Council. The entire locality is in the federal Division of Barker. The modern locality of Murbko includes a number of historic landings and homesteads along the river from the time when riverboats provided the most reliable transport. Murray River Crossings
The Murray River in south-eastern Australia has been a significant barrier to land-based travel and trade. This article lists and briefly describes all of the recognised crossing points. Many of these had also developed as river ports for transport of goods along the Murray. Now almost every significant town along the river has a bridge or vehicle-carrying cable ferry nearby. Steinfeld, South Australia
Steinfeld (formerly Stonefield) is a locality in South Australia on the plains east of the Mount Lofty Ranges, and north of the Sturt Highway. The village of Steinfeld was established in the 19th century. It was renamed to Stonefield in 1918 as many List of Australian place names changed from German names, places with German or German-sounding names were changed around World War I. The name reverted to Steinfeld in 1986. The Steinfeld Lutheran congregation was established in 1882, and met in a home until it built its own building in 1890. The congregation met in this building until November 2016. A Lutheran school existed from the 1880s until 1917, when it was forcibly closed by the state government as a result of World War I. It was replaced by a public school in 1917, which operated until 1969. Paisley is a locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, across the Murray River from Blanchetown, South Australia. It was formally named in September 2000 for the Hundred of Paisley which contains it. The Hundred of Paisley was named by Governor of South Australia, Governor MacDonnell in 1861 for his private secretary, J. G. Paisley. The Sturt Highway crosses the northwestern corner of Paisley at the eastern end of the List of crossings of the Murray River#South Australia, Blanchetown Bridge over the Murray River. Annadale is a locality in South Australia. It is located on the plains east of the Mount Lofty Ranges astride the Sturt Highway from Adelaide, between Truro and Blanchetown, South Australia. Halfway House Road is a heavy vehicle detour route that runs south from the Sturt Highway at Annadale. Annadale occupies the central part of the hundred of Anna. Mount Mary, South Australia
Mount Mary (formerly Krichauff and Beatty) is a small town on the Thiele Highway between Eudunda and Morgan in South Australia. It was also served by the Morgan railway line from 1878 until 1969 and is named for the Mount Mary railway station on that line. Despite the town's name, the terrain is essentially flat, and is believed to have been a corruption of ''Mound'' Mary. The town was originally surveyed in 1883 and named ''Krichauff'' in 1884, after the Hundred of Krichauff which in turn was named for Friedrich Krichauff. The name was changed from a name of enemy origin in 1918 to ''Beatty'' (along with the name of the hundred) then again in 1940 to Mount Mary to match the name of the railway station. Beatty remains the name of the locality covering the northern half of the hundred of Beatty. Mount Mary School opened as the Krichauff School in 1886. Eba, South Australia
Eba is a locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Murray River. It is on the Thiele Highway and was on the Morgan railway line, southwest of Morgan near the northwest bend of the Murray River. History The locality of Eba occupies the western half of the Hundred of Eba which was declared in 1860 and named after a friend of the governor. The railway siding was named for the hundred when the railway was built in 1878. The current boundaries were created in 2003 for the long-established name.
