Blanche Harbour-Douglas Bank Aquatic Reserve
__NOTOC__ Blanche Harbour-Douglas Bank Aquatic Reserve is a marine protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located in the waters of Spencer Gulf adjoining the localities of Blanche Harbor, South Australia, Blanche Harbor and Cultana, South Australia, Cultana on the east coast of Eyre Peninsula. It was declared in 1980 to protect “the mangrove-seagrass communities and the associated fish nursery areas for fisheries management.” Since 2012, it has been located within the boundaries of a ‘sanctuary zone’ in the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park. The aquatic reserve is classified as an International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN IUCN protected area categories#Category VI – Protected Area with sustainable use of natural resources, Category VI protected area. The Spencer Gulf is the westernmost and larger of two large inlets (the other being Gulf St Vincent) on the southern coast of Australia, in the state of South Australia, facing the Great Australian Bight. __NOTOC__ Blanche Harbor is a locality in South Australia located on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula overlooking Spencer Gulf about north north-west of the Adelaide city centre and about south of the centre of Port Augusta. Its boundaries were created in 1994 for “the long established name” which is derived from nearby bay of the same name. The locality includes the former Douglas Point South Shack Site. Blanche Harbor consists of an extent of low-rise dwellings adjoining a road named Shack Road which extends from Port Augusta West in the north along the coast with Spencer Gulf to localities in the south within the City of Whyalla. As of 2012, the locality is zoned specifically for residential development intended for use as holiday accommodation. Cultana, South Australia
Cultana is a locality on the northeastern part of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It is much larger than the original locality, and includes the Australian Army's Cultana Training Area. It includes the former Baxter Detention Centre which operated from 2002 to 2007. It spans the Lincoln Highway and Iron Knob to Whyalla Road, as well as being bordered by the Eyre Highway east of Iron Knob. Former locality The former locality of Cultana was near where the Port Bonython Road meets the Lincoln Highway and included Tregalana Park. It was absorbed into Whyalla Barson in September 2014. Eyre Peninsula
The Eyre Peninsula is a triangular peninsula in South Australia. It is bounded by the Spencer Gulf on the east, the Great Australian Bight on the west, and the Gawler Ranges to the north. Originally called Eyre’s Peninsula, it was named after explorer Edward John Eyre, who explored parts of the peninsula in 1839–41. The coastline was first charted by the expeditions of Matthew Flinders in 1801–02 and French explorer Nicolas Baudin around the same time.
