Blair Athol, Queensland
Blair Athol is a former town within Clermont in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. It was obliterated by the development of the Blair Athol coal mine. History Early settler James MacLaren took up a pastoral run in the area in 1863 and named it Blair Athol after the village Blair Atholl, the location of Blair Castle of the Duke of Atholl in Scotland. While sinking a well in 1864, he discovered coal on the property. By 1873, early shafts were dug, revealing extensive seams of coal. At that time, around 100 people were living in the town and there was a hotel, although no township had been officially surveyed. The town was surveyed in 1878. Blair Athol Provisional School opened on 6 November 1893. It became a State School in 1909. Blair Athol Post Office opened on 1 July 1927 (a receiving office had been open from 1910) and closed in 1966. Clermont is a rural town and locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. At the , the locality of Clermont had a population of 2952 people. Clermont is a major hub for the large coal mines in the region as well as serving agricultural properties. Geography Clermont is south-west of Mackay, at the junction of the Gregory and Peak Downs highways. The historic towns of North Copperfield () and South Copperfield (), often referred to collectively as Copperfield are along Christoe Street approximately south-west of the Clermont town centre. Blair Athol Coal Mine
The Blair Athol Coal Mine is a coal mine located in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. It is located over the former site of the township of Blair Athol. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 195 million tonnes of thermal coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Asia and the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 12.9 million tonnes of coal. Coal was first discovered at this location in 1864 and has been mined from this area since this time by different companies. There are four seams, three notable for their thickness. Numbered from top to bottom, the seams are: No.1 seam — 7.5 m thick (and completely mined out), No.2 seam — only 1.2 m thick (and not mined), No.3 seam — average 29 m thick and up to 32 m in places (the focus of more recent operations), and No. 4 seam — 3 to 5 m thick (yet to be mined). Blair Atholl (from the Scottish Gaelic: ''Blàr Athall'', originally ''Blàr Ath Fhodla'') is a village in Perthshire, Scotland, built about the confluence of the Rivers Tilt and Garry in one of the few areas of flat land in the midst of the Grampian Mountains. The Gaelic place-name Blair, from ''blàr'', 'field, plain', refers to this location. Atholl, which means 'new Ireland', from the archaic ''Ath Fhodla'' is the name of the surrounding district. On 13 March 2008, it was announced that Blair Atholl (together with some other Highland Perthshire villages) would be included in the Cairngorms National Park. Blair Castle (in Scottish Gaelic: Caisteil Bhlàir) stands in its grounds near the village of Blair Atholl in Perthshire in Scotland. It is the ancestral home of the Clan Murray, and was historically the seat of their chief, the Duke of Atholl, though the current (12th) Duke, Bruce Murray, lives in South Africa.
